During a recent survey of forest tree diseases in Western and Central Bhutan, Sirococcus shoot blight and an associated Sirococcus sp. were found on saplings and mature trees of Eastern Himalayan spruce (Picea spinulosa). Based on morphological characteristics and DNA sequence comparisons of the ITS region of the rDNA operon, representative isolates from Bhutan were unequivocally identified as Sirococcus conigenus. The DNA sequence data also showed that these isolates belong to the P group of S. conigenus. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of Sirococcus shoot blight from the Himalayas or any other part of Asia. Sirococcus conigenus does not appear to cause dramatic damage at the moment, but this fungus has the potential to cause severe disease problems on P. spinulosa in Bhutan. 相似文献

Nutrient availability in the soil is not only determined by chemical, physical, and micro-biological factors but can be actively influenced by the plant root system. Various components of root activity have been studied in our laboratory during the last 10 years. The major findings are summarized and discussed with special emphasis on root morphology, cation-anion imbalance and proton release, the mechanism of proton release and anion secretion. Large species differences in root morphology were found between red clover and rye-grass. Root morphology was also found to be controlled by environmental and physiological factors. Experimental results obtained with different plant species suggest that proton release by plant roots is not primarily a consequence of excess cation uptake to achieve charge balance in the plant, but rather that active proton extrusion by ATPase activity creates a charge imbalance and a pH gradient which drive nutrient uptake. The pH gradient across the plasmalemma of root cells was also found to be essential for the retention of organic anions by plant roots. 相似文献

Abstract.— Despite a large economical value of the ornamental fish trade, little information is available on the dietary ascorbic acid requirements of these species. Ascorbic acid requirements of fishes of the cichlid family appear to vary widely. Juvenile angelfish, a widely produced ornamental cichlid, were maintained on diets containing graded levels of ascorbyl monophosphate. Liver ascorbic acid concentrations after 96 d of feeding were significantly reduced in groups receiving 120 mg or less ascorbic acid equivalents/kg diet. However, no differences in growth or mortality between groups were found, and no external signs of ascorbic acid deficiency were observed, indicating a high resistance of this species against prolonged ascorbic acid deficiency. Based on the long possible life span of angelfish in the aquarium, we proposed a conservative dietary ascorbic acid requirement of 360 mg/ kg diet, necessary to maintain maximum tissue storage of this vitamin. 相似文献

Collection of fish milt by stripping risks the danger of milt contamination by urine. This may seriously influence milt characteristics and quality, including usefulness for cryopreservation. Urine contamination of milt may be avoided by using a catheter for sperm collection. The objectives of this study were to provide basic characteristics of milt collected with a catheter, to test the usefulness of this milt for cryopreservation, and to correlate characteristics of fresh and cryopreserved semen with sperm fertility rates. Milt from 25 rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) males were used. All samples were cryopreserved using the pellet method within 1 h of collection, using 0.6 m sucrose and 10% dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) as an extender. Catheterization resulted in semen of very good motility (> 90% motile spermatozoa) and high fertilization rates after cryopreservation (mean fertilization rate 81.8 ± 13.3% of control, at a sperm/egg ratio of 2.4 ± 0.3 × 106). Osmolality of seminal plasma and concentrations of sodium, potassium and magnesium ions had low variability, which suggests that they are important for creating a stable environment for sperm storage in the sperm duct. Higher variability of certain seminal plasma characteristics, such as protein concentration and antiproteinase activity, suggests that these characteristics are related to individual semen features of particular males. A strong correlation of seminal plasma zinc concentration with protein concentration may reflect an importance of zinc in semen biology. Cryopreservation caused a significant release of protein and acid phosphatase from spermatozoa. Our results did not reveal any single characteristic of semen collected by catheter that could be used as a powerful predictor of cryopreservation success, presumably because all samples were of high quality. 相似文献

Abstract.— We determined the effect of krill hydrolysate as a feed attractant in three freshwater fish species: yellow perch Perca flavescens . walleye Stizostedion vitreium . and lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis . Growth trials were conducted using a commercial trout starter diet (control) and the diet that was coated with liquid krill hydrolysate. The krill hydrolysate coated diet increased growth of yellow perch juveniles by 31% compared to control diet (average final wet weight, 734 ± 33 mg and 559 ± 82 mg, respectively). Moreover. weight gains were not significantly different than for tish Id exclusively live Artemiu nauplii. Similar results were obtained with walleye juveniles fed either a trout starter diet or 5% krill hydrolysate coated diet (8.9 ± 0.25 g and 11.6 ± 5.1 g wet weight, respectively). The food conversion ratio (FCR) was lower in fish fed the control diet, although not significantly different (2.95 ± 0.18 and 3.69 ± 0.39. for control and coated diet. respectively). The effect of krill hydrolysate on dry diet ingestion rates of lake whitefish and yellow perch larvae was also determined using radioactive (14 C) labelling. A commercial starter diet was coated with krill hydrolysate or the soluble fraction of krill hydrolysate was added to the experimental tank water. In both species. coating the diet with 5% krill hydrolysate resulted in significantly higher ingestion rates. Supplementation of krill hydrolysate soluble fraction to the tank water resulted in 200% increase in ingestion rate in comparison to control (uncoated starter diet), although it was not significantly different from krill coated diet and live Artemia nauplii ingestion rates. 相似文献

Complex agroforestry systems that mimic local forest structure, so-called ‘analogs’, are assumed to be of specific value to
rural people as well as the environment. The objective of this study was to document and evaluate the utilization of plant
resources by Philippine lowland farmers to identify native species suitable for integration in such a system. The interviewed
farmers maintain a comprehensive ethnobotanical knowledge. They reported using 122 plant species for 77 purposes. Eighty species
have medicinal value, 35 provide food, and 32 serve other uses. About 64% of the identified species are Philippine natives.
The life form composition of these species is dominated by trees but also includes herbs, lianas, and graminoids, thus providing
the structural elements required in analog systems. Nevertheless, only a few of the species seem to be promising for cultivation.
Many of them are ubiquitous in the vicinity of villages. Some species are also not much appreciated but act as staple food
only during food shortage. Even though several of the species have proven market value, such as rattan (e.g. Calamus
merrillii), or are reputed medicines, such as ‘Philippine ginseng’ (Sarcandra glabra), no cultivation could be observed. This shows that usefulness in itself cannot be the only criterion to promote species
but that it requires a careful analysis of the marketability of the respective species. In this context we suggest the following
three species that are of proven medicinal value for in-depth study: the liana Tinospora crispa (Menispermaceae), the tree Picrasma javanica (Simaroubaceae), and the herb Sarcandra glabra (Chloranthaceae). They represent three different life form strategies and would thus fit well in vertically structured agroforestry

The aim of the present study was to analyse the occurrence of chlamydiae in several mammalian host species. Clinical samples that previously tested positive in a Chlamydiaceae-specific real-time PCR were retested using six species-specific real-time PCR assays to identify the chlamydial species involved. Chlamydophila (Cp.) abortus was the agent most frequently found in cattle, sheep, horses, goats, and pigs. Detection in cattle of Cp. psittaci (11% of samples) and Chlamydia (C.) suis (9%), as well as Cp. psittaci in a goat sample was somewhat unexpected. DNA of two different chlamydiae was identified in 56 (12.7%) of 440 samples tested. Cp. felis was the predominant species found in cats, while in guinea pigs and rabbits only Cp. caviae was detected. Interestingly, the latter two pathogens were also identified in samples from dogs. The data show that mixed chlamydial infections are not rare and suggest an extended host range of individual species. 相似文献
