Growing salt‐tolerant under‐explored crops utilizing saline ground water can provide for an economic use of abandoned semiarid lands. Field trials were conducted between 1999 and 2003 on a calcareous soil in a semiarid region of northwest India. Woody perennials were planted at the sill of furrows and irrigated with water of high salinity (EC 10–28 dS m−1), low salinity (EC 5–9 dS m−1) and alternately with these two waters. Woody species included Azadirachta indica, Cordia rothii, Salvadora persica, Jatropha curcas, J. gossipifolia, Ricinus communis, Catharanthus roseus, Adhatoda vasica and Aloe barbadensis. Most of these could be grown successfully but S. persica—a highly salt‐tolerant halophyte—though it produced huge biomass, could not yield mature fruit due to frost injury. The salinity build up in the soil was greater during low‐rainfall years, but a good rainfall year, e.g. 714 mm in 2001, helped to leach out the accumulated salts. The uptake of Na+ in plants was greater when irrigated with water of high salinity, while K+ accumulation was greater with water of low salinity. Na+ accumulation was higher in roots as compared to other parts except in Jatropha and Salvadora, while K+ accumulation was greater in leaves. There was a negative correlation between Na+ and K+ accumulation and a positive correlation between Ca2+ and Mg2+. Thus, saline water (ECiw 12 dS m−1) can successfully be used for growing several under‐explored crops of high economic value. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The perennial Medicago sativa cv. Gabès is widely grown on saline soils in Tunisian oases. The mechanisms by which this NaCl‐tolerant cultivar maintains a positive growth balance were analyzed. In this plant of considerable agronomic interest, biochemical analyses were conducted in order to study the effects of salinity on mature leaves. Free‐radical detoxification mechanisms and changes induced by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in response to the NaCl stress were compared between the upper (young) and lower (old) carbohydrate source leaves. Long‐term NaCl (150 mM) treatment significantly reduced the size of source leaves supporting growth. Salinity damage was greater in the lower than in the upper leaves. This damage was associated with a high Na+ : K+ ratio and a decrease in the activity of H2O2‐scavenging enzymes, leading to lipid peroxidation. In lower source leaves that were mainly affected by ionic stress, superoxide dismutase (SOD) was overexpressed and guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) activity increased. In contrast, in upper source leaves that were mainly exposed to water deficit, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities increased whereas GPX activity was unchanged. The upper source leaves maintained adequate ionic and water status and an efficient ROS detoxification, allowing sinks to be supplied with photoassimilates and maintaining a positive growth balance in this cultivar of alfalfa.  相似文献

Abstract

Tomato and melon plants were grown in a greenhouse and irrigated with nutrient solution having an EC of 2 dS m?1 (control treatment) and 4, 6, and 8 dS m?1, produced by adding NaCl to the control nutrient solution. After 84 days, leaf water relations, gas exchange parameters, and ion concentrations, as well as plant growth, were measured. Melon plants showed a greater reduction in shoot weight and leaf area than tomato at the two highest salinity levels used (6 and 8 dS m?1). Net photosynthesis (Pn) in melon plants tended to be lower than in tomato, for all saline treatments tested. Pn was reduced by 32% in melon plants grown in nutrient solution having an EC of 4 dS m?1, relative to control plants, and no further decline occurred at higher EC levels. In tomato plants, the Pn decline occurred at EC of 6 dS m?1, and no further reduction was detected at EC of 8 dS m?1. The significant reductions in Pn corresponded to similar leaf Cl? concentrations (around 409 mmol kg?1 dry weight) in both plant species. Net Pn and stomatal conductance were linearly correlated in both tomato and melon plants, Pn being more sensitive to changes in stomatal conductance (gs) in melon than in tomato leaves. The decline in the growth parameters caused by salinity in melon and tomato plants was influenced by other factors in addition to reduction in Pn rates. Melon leaves accumulated larger amounts of Cl? than tomato, which caused a greater reduction in growth and a reduction in Pn at lower salinity levels than in tomato plants. These facts indicate that tomato is more salt‐tolerant than melon.  相似文献

The effects of salt stress on plant growth parameters, lipid peroxidation and some antioxidant enzyme activities [superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1), catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6), peroxidase (POD, EC 1.11.1.7), glutathione reductase (GR; EC EC 1.6.4.2) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11) activity] were studied in the leaves of mustard. Plants were exposed to two different concentrations of NaCl stress (100 and 150 mM) for 45 days and were sprayed with GA3 (75 ml pot?1, conc. 75 mg l?1) once a week. Salt stress resulted in decrease in the growth and biomass yield of mustard but the exogenous application of GA3 enhanced these parameters significantly. Application of GA3 counteracted the adverse effects of NaCl salinity on relative water content, electrolyte leakage and chlorophyll (Chl) content. GA3 was sufficient to attenuate partially the stimulatory effect of NaCl supply on proline and glycinebetaine biosynthesis. GA3 reduced lipid peroxidation in the leaves, which was increased during salt stress. The activity of all the antioxidant enzymes was increased significantly during salt stress in mustard. The exogenous application of GA3 decreased the enzyme activity. The results of the present study indicate that usage of GA3 reduces the harmful effects of salinity and increases resistance to salinity in mustard plant.  相似文献

A laboratory incubation experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of magnesium chloride–induced salinity on carbon dioxide (CO2) evolution and nitrogen (N) mineralization in a silty loam nonsaline alkaline soil. Magnesium chloride (MgCl2) salinity was induced at 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 30, and 40.0 dS m?1 and measured CO2 evolution and N mineralization during 30 days of incubation. Both CO2 evolution and N mineralization decreased significantly with increasing salinity. The cumulative CO2 evolution decreased from 235 mg kg?1 soil at electrical conductivity (EC) 0.65 dS m?1 to 11.9 mg kg?1 soil at 40 dS m?1 during 30 days of incubation. Similarly, N mineralization decreased from 185.4 mg kg?1 at EC 0.65 dS m?1 to 34.45 mg kg?1 at EC 40.0 dS m?1 during the same period. These results suggested that increasing magnesium chloride salinity from 4 dS m?1 adversely affect microbial activity in terms of carbon dioxide evolution and N mineralization.  相似文献

Most of the crop salt tolerance studies are often conducted in a glasshouse and are limited under field conditions. Therefore, the present research study was conducted under field conditions to evaluate the performance of six wheat cultivars at five salinity levels (EC 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 dS m?1) in split plot design with three replications. Increasing salinity significantly increased soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR). Yield parameters of different cultivars were affected more at higher salinity levels than lower in two years. Data over two years revealed that up to EC 9 dS m?1 cultivars PBW 658 and HD 2967 performed ???better on the absolute yield basis but PBW 621 produced ?higher relative yield. At EC 12 dS m?1, PBW 658 produced significantly higher grain yield (4.23 t ha?1) than cultivars HD 2967 (4.11 t ha?1) and PBW 621 (3.99 t ha?1); therefore, should be preferred at salinity more than 9 dS m?1.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present research was to study the effects of boron (B) and potassium chloride (KCl) induced salinity on growth, nutritional status, and chlorophyll content of the cherry rootstocks CAB 6P (Prunus cerasus L.) and Gisela 5 (Prunus cerasus L. × Prunus canescens L.). Plants produced the longest shoots, more leaves, and the greatest fresh weights of shoots and leaves when treated with 0.025 mM B combined with the lower level of salinity (0.75 dS m?1). CAB 6P plants retained most of their leaves until the end of the experiment, whereas Gisela 5 plants showed higher leaf shedding. Irrigation of plants with solutions containing 0.2 mM B and electrical conductivities (EC) of 4 dS m?1 resulted in lower leaf chlorophyll contents (SPAD units) when compared with all other treatments. Nitrogen (N) concentrations of leaves from both rootstocks decreased as the EC of the nutrient solution increased from 0.75 to 4 mM. Potassium (K) concentrations of leaves from both rootstocks increased as salinity levels increased.  相似文献

To investigate the mechanism of cadmium (Cd) detoxification in rice (Oryza sativa L.), a Cd‐tolerant mutant cadH‐5, obtained by an Agrobacterium tumefaciens‐based gene‐delivery system, was used for a Cd‐tolerance and accumulation study. After 15 d of exposure to 0.75 mM CdCl2, significant phenotypic differences were observed between the wild type (WT) and cadH‐5. When exposed to 0.5 mM CdCl2, higher Cd levels were accumulated in cadH‐5 root cell wall, root cytosol, and membranes than those in WT. However, Cd concentrations in root tissues varied in both WT and cadH5. No significant difference of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentrations was observed between WT and cadH‐5, while contents of cell‐wall polysaccharides and phytochelatins (PCs) in the mutant were higher compared to WT. The ratios of reduced glutathione to oxidized glutathione (GSH : GSSG) and ascorbate to dehydroascorbate (ASC : DHA) were lower in WT than in cadH‐5, while the NADPH : NADP+ ratio was different to the ratios of GSH : GSSG and ASC : DHA; the ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11), glutathione peroxidase (GR, EC 1.6.4.2), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR, EC 1.8.5.1), and monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR, EC 1.6.5.4) activities were lower in WT compared to cadH‐5. Our results indicate that under long‐term Cd stress, cadH‐5 plants can accumulate more Cd with more PC. Also, the redox status of ASC‐GSH cycle was more inhibited in WT than in cadH‐5 plants, rendering WT less able to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS). The cadH‐5 mutant maintains relatively high ASC, GSH, and NADPH concentrations, ratios of ASC : DHA, GSH : GSSG, and NADPH : NADP+, as well as antioxidative enzymatic activities and PC concentrations. Thus, it is tolerant of relatively high Cd accumulation.  相似文献

The magnitude of crop growth and yield depends on the salinity level, the toxic ions present, and the irrigation system used. In order to study the effect of saline sprinkler irrigation on soybean growth and ionic accumulation in plant tissues a pot experiment was set up. There were three irrigation water quality treatments [electrical conductivity (EC) 0, 2, and 4 dS m?1]. Soybean aerial biomass was 25% lower than the Control when irrigation salinity was 4 dS m?1. Clearly salinity entering via leaves affected the grain filling stage and severely reduced soybean grain production (80% reduction) when salinity in irrigation water surpassed 2 dS m?1. Sprinkler irrigation aggravates soybean's low salinity tolerance and restricts its cropping in such conditions. For early stages two linear relationships between leaf chloride (Cl?) concentration (Y = 14.2–2x) or potassium (K+)/ sodium (Na+) ratio (Y = 5.3x?3.4) and soybean grain yield were found. Both relationships may be used as diagnostic tools for soybean growing under saline sprinkler irrigation.  相似文献

Salinity stress is one of the important agricultural problems in the world. A factorial experiment based on completely randomized design with four replications was conducted to evaluate the effects of phytohormones (gibberellic acid and abscisic acid) on the activity of antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase), rubisco activity and content, and proline in three wheat cultivars (Gascogen, Zagros, and Kuhdasht) under control and salinity stress (3.5 and 7 dS m?1). The results showed that salinity stress (3.5 and 7 dS m?1) decreased the activity of catalase, rubisco, carboxylase, but increased peroxidase, superoxide dismutase activity and proline content. Gibberellic acid caused 58.03% increased in rubisco carboxylase activity in Zagros at 7 dS m?1 in comparison with abscisic acid under salinity stress compared with the control plants in Kuhdasht. Activity of superoxide dismutase in Kuhdasht cultivar at 7 dS m?1 salinity level showed 76.43% increased in Gascogen under salinity stress compared with the control plants with gibberellic acid application. The highest proline content as an osmolyte was found in Zagros at 7 dS m?1 salinity level with abscisic acid (194 μmol g?1 DM) application. Peroxidase activity increased 83.31% and catalase activity decreased 61.27% compared with the control plants in Zagros. Gibberellic acid application significantly prevented reduction in rubisco content under salinity stress. In conclusion, increased in peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activity and proline content decreased the adverse effects of salinity stress on studied cultivars. Also, the foliage spray of gibberellic acid enhanced and improved the growth condition. In this experiment, Zagros cultivar showed more tolerance to salinity stress than the other two cultivars.  相似文献

□ Plants from 60-day-old Lime Thyme (Thymus citriodorus) cuttings were potted in a medium of coconut fiber and peat moss and were treated with three different nutrient solutions: T1, T2, and T3. T1 was a standard nutrient solution; T2 was incremented with macronutrients up to an electrical conductivity (EC) of 2.8 dS m?1; and T3 was the same as T1 but incremented up to an EC of 2.8 dS m?1 with sodium chloride. The plants were then grown for 90 days in a greenhouse with natural daylight in Almería, Spain. Root growth was not affected by the treatments. The dry weight of the leaves and the total dry weight of the plants benefited from the salinity. The specific salinity of the sodium chloride negatively affected growth compared to the same salinity in the complete nutrient solution.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Silicon (Si) protects plants from multiple abiotic and biotic stresses The effect of exogenous Si levels (50, 75, and 100 mg kg?1) on the growth, boron (B) and Si uptake, lipid peroxidation (MDA), lipoxygenase activity (LOX; EC 1.13.11.12), proline, and H2O2 accumulation, non-enzymatic antioxidant activity (AA) and the activities of major antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, SOD, EC 1.15.1.1; catalase, CAT, EC 1.11.1.6 and ascorbate peroxidase, APX, EC 1.11.1.11) of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were investigated under glasshouse conditions. Increasing levels of Si supplied to the soil with 20 mg kg?1 B counteracted the deleterious effects of B on shoot growth. Application of B significantly increased the B concentration in barley plants. However, Si application decreased B concentrations. Increasing application of Si increased the Si concentration in barley plants. The concentration of H2O2 was increased by B toxicity but decreased by Si supply. Boron toxicity decreased proline concentrations and increased lipid peroxidation (MDA content) and LOX activity of barley. Compared with control plants, the activities of AA, SOD, CAT, and APX in B stressed plants grown without Si decreased, and application of Si increased their activities under toxic B conditions. The LOX activity was decreased by Si. Based on the present work, it can be concluded that Si alleviates B toxicity by possibly preventing oxidative membrane damage, both through lowering the uptake of B and by increasing tolerance to excess B within the tissues.  相似文献

To determine the effects of irrigation water quality, plants were irrigated with normal potable water [0.25 dS m?1 electrical conductivity (EC), 25 mg L?1 sodium (Na), 55 mg L?1 chloride (Cl)], treated effluent (0.94 dS m?1 EC, 122 mg L?1 Na, 143 mg L?1 Cl) and saline water with low salinity (1.24 dS m?1 EC, 144 mg L?1 Na and 358 mg L?1 Cl) and high salinity (2.19 dS m?1 EC, 264 mg L ?1Na and 662 mg L?1 Cl) for snow peas, and high salinity (3.07 dS m?1 EC, 383 mg L?1 Na and 965 mg L?1 Cl) and very high salinity (5.83 dS m?1 EC, 741 mg L?1 Na and 1876 mg L?1 Cl) for celery. The greater salts build up in the soil and ion toxicity (Cl and Na) with saline water irrigation contributed to significantly greater reduction in root and shoot biomass, water use, yield and water productivity (yield kg kL?1 of water used) of snow peas and celery compared with treated effluent and potable water irrigation. There was 8%, 56% and 74% reduction in celery yield respectively with treated effluent, high salinity and very high salinity saline water irrigation compared with potable water irrigation. The Na concentration in snow peas shoots increased by 54%, 234% and 501% with treated effluent, low and high salinity saline water irrigation. Similarly, the increases in Na concentration in celery shoots were 19%, 35% and 82%. The treated effluent irrigation also resulted in a significant increase in soil EC, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content compared with potable water irrigation. The heavy metals besides salts build up appears to have contributed to yield reductions with treated effluent irrigation. The study reveals strong implications for the use of saline water and treated effluent for irrigation of snow peas and celery. The salt build up within the root zone and soil environment would be critical in the long-run with the use of saline water and treated effluent for irrigation of crops. To minimize the salinity level in rhizosphere, an alternate irrigation of potable water with treated effluent or low salinity level water may be better option.  相似文献

Due to increased population and urbanization, freshwater demand for domestic purposes has increased resulting in a smaller proportion for irrigation of crops. We carried out a 3‐year field experiment in the Indus Plains of Pakistan on salt‐affected soil (ECe 15·67–23·96 dS m−1, pHs 8·35–8·93, SAR 70–120, infiltration rate 0·72–0·78 cm h−1, ρ b 1·70–1·80 Mg m−3) having tile drainage in place. The 3‐year cropping sequence consisted of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crops in rotation. These crops were irrigated with groundwater having electrical conductivity (EC) 2·7 dS m−1, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) 8·0 (mmol L−1)1/2 and residual sodium carbonate (RSC) 1·3 mmolc L−1. Treatments were: (1) irrigation with brackish water without amendment (control); (2) Sesbania (Sesbania aculeata) green manure each year before rice (SM); (3) applied gypsum at 100 per cent soil gypsum requirement (SGR) and (4) applied gypsum as in treatment 3 plus sesbania green manure each year (GSM). A decrease in soil salinity and sodicity and favourable infiltration rate and bulk density over pre‐experiment levels are recorded. GSM resulted in the largest decrease in soil salinity and sodicity. There was a positive relationship between crop yield and economic benefits and improvement in soil physical and chemical properties. On the basis of six crops, the greatest net benefit was obtained from GSM. Based on this long‐term study, combined use of gypsum at 100 per cent soil gypsum requirement along with sesbania each year is recommended for soil amelioration and crop production. The response to arsenic was evaluated for photosynthetic pigments, lipid peroxidation and anti-oxidative enzymes in black gram. Black gram (Vigna mungo) subjected to arsenic doses of 100 µM and 200 µM, showed increased amount of lipid peroxidation. Activity of peroxidase (POD) increased tremendously in arsenic treated Vigna leaves over control. Similarly, activities of enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) also increased with increase in arsenic. Analysis of native PAGE superoxide dismutase activity showed one manganese (Mn)-SOD and two copper/zinc (Cu/Zn)-SOD isoenzymes in black gram leaves, whose intensity increased especially at 200 µM arsenic treatment. However, activity of catalase (CAT) decreased with increase in concentrations of arsenic. This clearly indicates that except CAT, all studied antioxidative enzymes like SOD, POD and APX showed increased expression at arsenic treatments, which reflects their protective role against arsenic toxicity in black gram plants. Photosynthetic pigments like chlorophyll and carotenoids showed reduction with increasing concentrations of arsenic in treatment solutions.  相似文献

Rising temperatures are a major threat to global wheat production, particularly when accompanied by other abiotic stressors such as mineral nutrient deficiencies. This study aimed to quantify the effects of supra‐optimal temperature on growth, photosynthetic performance, and antioxidative responses in bread wheat cultivars grown under varied zinc (Zn) supply. Two bread wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L., cvs. Lasani‐2008 and Faisalabad‐2008) with varied responsiveness to Zn supply and drought tolerance were cultured in nutrient solution with low (0.1 µM) or adequate (1.0 µM) Zn under optimal (25/20°C day/night) or supra‐optimal (36/28°C day/night) temperature regimes. Supra‐optimal temperature severely reduced root but not shoot biomass, whereas low Zn reduced shoot as well as root biomass. Shoot‐to‐root biomass ratio was reduced under low Zn but increased under supra‐optimal temperature. Supra‐optimal temperature inhibited root elongation and volume particularly in plants supplied with low Zn. In both cultivars, Zn efficiency index was reduced by supra‐optimal temperature, whereas heat tolerance index was reduced by low Zn supply. Supra‐optimal temperature decreased photosynthesis, quantum yield, and chlorophyll density in low‐Zn but not in adequate‐Zn plants. In comparison, low Zn decreased specific activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and increased glutathione reductase (GR), where supra‐optimal temperature increased SOD, decreased GR and did not change APX activity in leaves and roots. Moreover, supra‐optimal temperature severely reduced shoot Zn concentration and Zn uptake per plant specifically under adequate Zn supply. Overall, supra‐optimal temperature exacerbated adverse effects of low Zn supply, resulting in severe reductions in growth traits viz. shoot and root biomass, root length and volume, and consequently impeded Zn uptake, enhanced oxidative stress and impaired photosynthetic performance. Adequate Zn nutrition is crucial to prevent yield loss in wheat cultivated under supra‐optimal temperatures.  相似文献

Olive trees (Olea europaea L.) are considered moderately tolerant to salinity, with clear differences found among cultivars. One‐year‐old self‐rooted olive plants of the Croatian cv. Oblica and Italian cv. Leccino were grown for 90 d in nutrient solutions containing 0, 66, or 166 mM NaCl, respectively. The shoot length and the number of nodes and leaves for both cultivars were not affected by salinity up to 66 mM NaCl. However, at 166 mM NaCl, growth of Leccino was reduced earlier and to a higher extent than growth of Oblica. After 10 d of exposure to 66 and 166 mM NaCl, increased activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was observed in Leccino, whereas there was almost no response in Oblica. Reduced SOD activity in Leccino at 166 mM NaCl was observed after prolonged stress (90 d), whereas in Oblica SOD was increased at 66 mM compared to control or 166 mM NaCl. Electrolyte and K+ leakage were increased and relative water content decreased as NaCl concentration increased with similar intensity of response measured in both cultivars. Oblica exhibited an ability to keep a higher K+ : Na+ ratio at all salinity levels compared to Leccino, but since no difference was found in leaf K+ concentration, this was mainly achieved by less Na+ ions reaching the younger leaves. The antioxidative system represents a component of the complex olive salt‐tolerance mechanism, and it seems that the role of SOD in protection from oxidative stress depends on sodium accumulation in leaves.

Sodium (Na+) dominated soils reduce saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) by clay dispersion and plugging pores, while gypsum (CaSO4•2H2O) application counters these properties. However, variable retrieval of texturally different saline–sodic soils with gypsum at soil gypsum requirement (SGR) devised to define its quantity best suited to improve Ks, leach Na+ and salts. This study comprised loamy‐sand (LS), sandy loam (SL), and clay loam (CL) soils with electrical conductivity of saturation extract (ECe) of ~8 dS m−1, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) of ~44 (mmol L−1)1/2 and exchangeable sodium of ~41%, receiving no gypsum (G0), gypsum at 25% (G25), 50% (G50) and 75% (G75) of SGR. Soils packed in lysimeters were leached with low‐carbonate water [EC at 0·39 dS m−1, SAR at 0·56 (mmol L−1)1/2 and residual sodium carbonate at 0·15 mmolc L−1]. It proved that a rise in gypsum rate amplified Ks of LS ≫ SL > CL. However, Ks of LS soil at G25 and others at G75 remained efficient for salts and Na+ removal. Retention of calcium with magnesium (Ca2+ + Mg2+) by LS and SL soils increased by G50 and decreased in G75, while in CL, it also increased with G75. The enhanced Na+ leaching efficiency in LS soil with G25 was envisaged by water stay for sufficient time to dissolve gypsum and exchange and leach out Na+. Overall, the superiority of gypsum for LS at G25, SL at G50 and CL at G75 predicted cost‐effective soil reclamation with a decrease in ECe and SAR below 0·97 dS m−1 and 5·92 (mmol L−1)1/2, respectively. Eustoma grandiflorum (Raf.) Shinn. (lisianthus) is a moderately salt tolerant species that can be produced commercially under irrigation with saline wastewaters prevalent in two salt-affected areas of California. The objective of the present studies was to determine the effect of irrigation with saline waters of two different compositions on the ion accumulation and ion relations of lisianthus ‘Pure White’ and ‘Echo Blue’. The ionic composition of irrigation waters simulated the compositions typical of i) seawater dilutions (SWD) and ii) concentrations of Colorado River water (CCRW). Electrical conductivities (EC) of SWD and CCRW were between 2 and 12 dS · m?1. Plants irrigated with CCRW were higher in Ca2+ compared to plants irrigated with SWD water. Calcium was also higher in ‘Pure White’ than in ‘Echo Blue’. Increasing EC of irrigation water caused a significant decrease in shoot and leaf Ca2+ concentration in ‘Echo Blue’, but had no effect on Ca2+ content of ‘Pure White’ shoots and leaves. Magnesium concentration in ‘Echo Blue’ was higher than in ‘Pure White’. Electrical conductivity did not significantly affect Mg2+ concentration of either cultivar, despite the increasingly higher external concentration. Potassium concentration of young and mature leaves of ‘Echo Blue’ increased as EC increased from 2 to 8 dS · m?1, then decreased significantly once EC exceeded 8 dS · m?1. Potassium concentration of ‘Pure White’ leaves decreased over the range of salinity treatments tested, suggesting that the reduced potassium ion (K+) activity at EC levels of 8 dS · m?1, or less, that resulted in lower leaf?K+ in ‘Pure White’ did not cause a decrease in K+ uptake in ‘Echo Blue’. Increases in external Na+ caused a significant increase in Na+ in ‘Pure White’ leaves and these plants exhibited the best growth even when levels of Na+ were high enough to be considered detrimental for growth.  相似文献
