Purpose

In this paper, a novel modeling approach is applied to assess the unique transport characteristics of hydrophobic (bitumen containing) cohesive sediment for the Ells River, AB, Canada. The modeling offers a new way of treating the transport and fate of fine sediment in rivers and points to the importance of including a sediment entrapment process in the modeling of the Ells River sediment dynamics.

Materials and methods

The modeling approach involves combining two existing models (RIVFLOC and MOBED). Using fine sediment transport parameters derived from laboratory flume experiments (e.g., settling velocity of sediment as a function of floc size and the critical shear stresses for deposition) and the calculated flow field from the MOBED model (using field survey data such as, cross-sectional geometry, river slope, grain size of bed material, and discharge), the RIVFLOC model is used to predict the transport characteristics (including entrapment) of the hydrophobic Ells River sediment.

Results and discussion

The application of the connected RIVFLOC and MOBED models, demonstrated the unique hydrophobic sediment dynamics of the Ells River. The model showed no deposition (in the classical sense) of the hydrophobic sediment as the bed shear stresses, even at base flow, are well above the critical bed shear for deposition (flocculation is shown to occur, but its impact on settling is negligible given the high shear stresses). However, the model showed the possibility of fine sediment ingression into the river bed (interstitial voids) due to the entrapment process which is known to occur at bed shear stresses well above the critical shear stress for deposition.

Conclusions

The salient features of RIVFLOC and MOBED models and their applications for understanding the transport and fate of unique hydrophobic fine sediments are presented. The models are shown to be useful for the understanding and projection of flow characteristics and sediment dynamics (including entrapment), and will be of benefit for the adaptive management of riverine monitoring programs given various flow scenarios including extreme events and climate change.

Purpose

Identifying sources and fluxes of suspended matter within the catchment is vitally important for the water quality of rivers and for establishing sediment management plans. Constituents of suspended particles are of abiotic and biotic origin. In the Elbe, the biotic fraction of suspended particles is mainly composed of phytoplankton biomass. In this study, total seston and phytoplankton are analyzed for their seasonality, their interdependence and temporal trends over three or five decades, respectively.

Materials and methods

The biotic load was separated from the total suspended matter load, and time series of total suspended substances (seston) (1964 to 2015) and chlorophyll a values (1985 to 2015) were analyzed. Our analyses focused on the seasonal dynamics, long-term trends, and the correlation to hydrological events.

Results and discussion

The mean share of phytoplankton in total seston accounted for 24% in summer months (April–September), with a negative correlation between discharge and total seston, and 11% in winter months (October–March), with a weak positive correlation between discharge and total seston. The long-term trend of seston load was decreasing, while phytoplankton load did not show a significant trend.

Conclusions

Autochthonous biogenic portions should not be neglected in the budget of total suspended matter loads in the Elbe catchment. Our results indicate that land-use and industrial changes subsequent to the German reunification mainly caused the observed trend. Phytoplankton growth superimposes the seasonal dynamics of seston in summer, whereas in the long term, decreasing mineral fraction dominates the significantly decreasing trend.

Purpose

Rivers feeding into the Loskop Dam, South Africa, pass through coal mining and heavily industrialised areas. Previous studies investigating mass mortalities of crocodile and fish in the river system, revealed the presence of organic compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in their tissues.

Materials and methods

Samples were collected from nine sites within the dam in winter and summer. Liquid-liquid and microwave-assisted extraction was used for preconcentrating PAHs from water and sediment samples, respectively. Extracts were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the selected ion monitoring mode to determine the presence and levels of the 16 United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA)-priority PAHs.

Results and discussion

Significant levels of PAHs were found in both water and sediment samples. Concentrations were higher in sediments than in water, as well as in samples collected in winter. Levels of PAHs in sediments were generally higher than those reported by many researchers for other water bodies in industrialised areas. Zebrafish embryos were used to assess potential risks associated with the water and sediment, and to determine the effects of PAHs on aquatic life. Embryos, exposed to intact water and sediment samples, as well as to diluted sediment extracts, were monitored for 120 h post fertilisation. Sediment proved more toxic to zebrafish embryos than water, causing delayed embryo development and malformations.

Conclusions

These findings are alarming as they indicate that this water system is under stress. These findings can be typical of any water system situated in a coal mining and industrial region.

Purpose

The low conductivity of sediments for mass and electron transport is the most severe limiting factor in sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs), so that sediment ameliorations yielded more remarkable effects than electrode improvements. The objective of this research was to enhance the electricity generation of SMFCs with amendments of biochar to freshwater sediments for conductivity enhancement.

Materials and methods

Laboratory-scale SMFCs were constructed and biochars were produced from coconut shells at different temperatures. Variations in the power output, electrode potential, internal resistance, total organic carbon (TOC) content, and microbial communities were measured.

Results and discussion

Amending with biochar reduced the charge transfer resistances of SMFCs and enriched the Firmicutes (mainly Fusibacter sp.) in the sediment, which improved the SMFC power generation by two- to tenfold and enhanced the TOC removal rate by 1.7- to fourfold relative to those without the amendment.

Conclusions

The results suggested that biochar amendment is a promising strategy to enhance SMFC power production, and the electrical conductivity of biochar should be considered important when interpreting the impact biochar has on the electrical performance of soil or freshwater sediment MFCs.

Purpose

A thorough understanding of mechanisms controlling sedimentation and erosion is vital for a proper assessment of the effectiveness of delta restoration. Only few field-based studies have been undertaken in freshwater tidal wetlands. Furthermore, studies that measured sediment deposition in newly created wetlands are also sparse. This paper aims to identify the factors controlling the sediment trapping of two newly created freshwater tidal wetlands.

Materials and methods

Two recently re-opened polder areas in the Biesbosch, The Netherlands are used as study area. Field measurements of water levels, flow velocities, and turbidity at both the in- and outlet of the areas were carried out to determine the sediment budgets and trapping efficiencies under varying conditions of river discharge, tide, and wind in the period 2014–2016.

Results and discussion

Short-term sediment fluxes of the two study areas varied due to river discharge, tide, and wind. A positive sediment budget and trapping efficiency was found for the first study area, which has a continuing supply of river water and sediment. Sediment was lost from the second study area which lies further from the river and had a lower sediment supply. The daily sediment budget is positively related to upstream river discharge, and in general, export takes place during ebb and import during flood. However, strong wind events overrule this pattern, and trapping efficiencies decrease for increasing wind strengths at mid-range river discharges and for the highest river discharges due to increased shear stress.

Conclusions

Delta restoration, based on sedimentation to compensate for sea-level rise and soil subsidence, could only be effective when there is a sufficient supply of water and sediment. Management to enhance the trapping efficiency of the incoming sediment should focus on directing sufficient river flow into the wetland, ensuring the supply of water and sediment within the system during a tidal cycle, creating sufficiently large residence time of water within the polder areas for sediment settling, and decreasing wave shear stress by the establishment of vegetation or topographic irregularities.

Purpose

Nitrogen (N) application in excess of assimilatory capacity for aquaculture ponds can lead to water-quality deterioration through ammonia accumulation with toxicity to fish. Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) potentially process extra ammonium, so their abundance and diversity are of great ecological significance. This study aimed to reveal variations in communities of AOA and AOB as affected by aquaculture activities.

Materials and methods

From June to September 2012, water and sediments were sampled monthly in three ponds feeding Mandarin fish in a suburb of Wuhan City, China. Molecular methods based on ammonia monooxygenase (amoA) gene were used to determine abundance and diversity of AOA and AOB in the sediments.

Results and discussion

The pond with the highest fish stock had the highest nutrient loadings in terms of different forms of N and carbon (C) in both sediment and water. The abundance and diversity of AOB were significantly higher than those of AOA in the sediment. The AOB abundance showed a significantly positive relationship to concentration of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in interstitial water, and both abundance and diversity of AOA were significantly negative to concentration of ammonium in interstitial water. Furthermore, AOA species affiliated to Nitrososphaera-like and Nitrosophaera Cluster was distinguishable from those observed in other aquaculture environments.

Conclusions

Nutrients in sediment were enriched by intensive aquaculture activity, among which organic N and C, together with ammonium and SRP, shaped the communities of ammonia oxidizers, with AOB dominating over AOA in terms of abundance and diversity.

Purpose

Cohesive sediment is able to flocculate and create flocs, which are larger than individual particles and less dense. The phenomenon of flocculation has an important role in sediment transport processes such as settling, deposition and erosion. In this study, laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the effect of key hydrodynamic parameters such as suspended sediment concentration and salinity on floc size and settling velocity. Results were compared with previous laboratory and field studies at different estuaries.

Materials and methods

Experimental tests were conducted in a 1-L glass beaker of 11-cm diameter using suspended sediment samples from the Severn Estuary. A particle image velocimetry system and image processing routine were used to measure the floc size distribution and settling velocity.

Results and discussion

The settling velocity was found to range from 0.2 to 1.2 mm s?1. Settling velocity changed in the case of increasing suspended sediment concentration and was controlled by the salinity. The faster settling velocity occurred when sediment concentration is higher or the salinity is lower than 2.5. On the other hand, at salinities higher than 20, in addition to increasing SSC, it was found that the situation was reversed, i.e. the lower the sediment concentration, the faster the settling velocity.

Conclusions

Sediment flocculation is enhanced with increasing sediment concentration but not with increasing salinity.

Purpose

The Three Gorges Dam project is one of the biggest projects in the world. The water level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) was created with impoundment. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the ecotoxicological potential of the sediment extracts from the WLFZ and propose future WLFZ monitoring for early detection of environmental changes brought about by pollution.

Materials and methods

The investigation was performed by using cell-based in vitro bioassays to determine acute cytotoxicity (neutral red retention assay) and mechanism-specific aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-mediated activity (7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) induction assay) of sediment extracts with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) liver cells (RTL-W1).

Results and discussion

Results showed that the cytotoxicity and AhR-mediated toxicity potential of the sediment extracts from the WLFZ in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) were moderate of level compared with the ecotoxicity of sediments from other river systems. However, according to a sediment classification system in Germany, sediments from some individual sites in the WLFZ showed strong toxicity. Compared to the results from the Yangtze River in our previous study, more attention should be paid to the aryl hydrocarbon receptor inducers in the WLFZ in TGR.

Conclusions

The in vitro bioassays used in this study may serve as a valuable tool to predict the potential ecological hazards of the organic pollutants in the WLFZ to the aquatic organisms in some extent.

Purpose

Stormwater discharges include contaminated sediments that accumulate in the receiving water body. It is thus important to investigate sediment and pollutant processes and pathways from the catchment to, and within, the receiving water. These processes may be influenced by seasonal changes. The objective of this study was to investigate the stormwater impact on receiving waters in the Luleå area, Northern Sweden; seasonal changes in contamination loads in the receiving waters due to snowmelt; and factors influencing the pollutant pathways in the receiving waters.

Materials and methods

In front of three storm sewer outlets in Luleå, samples of bottom sediment (surface layer 0–2 cm) were collected from the connecting ditches and the downstream water body in autumn and spring (before and after the snow season 2009/2010). The characteristics of the receiving waters differed in geomorphology and vegetation. The sediment was analyzed for loss-on-ignition (LOI), grain size, and bulk concentrations of SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, Fe2O3, MnO, Na2O, P2O5, TiO2, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, S, V, and Zn. The sediment contamination was compared to concentrations at a reference point in Luleå where the bottom sediment was not affected by stormwater discharges and with Swedish environmental quality guidelines. Pearson’s correlation and a principal component analysis were used to further evaluate the results.

Results and discussion

Relative to the reference point, elevated trace metal concentrations were detected in sediments at all three sampling stations. At two of the stations, seasonal variations in ditch sediment grain size, LOI, and contaminant concentrations were observed, originating from stormwater sediment. Snowmelt runoff caused an increased proportion of fine-grained sediment fractions (<0.063 mm) in spring, mainly due to changes in runoff intensity and high sediment loads in the snowmelt runoff. The retention of metals appeared to be due to low turbulence in the water and the presence of organic material.

Conclusions

Stormwater discharge affected the contaminant concentrations in the bottom sediments. The observed seasonal variation of contaminants indicated that relatively high amounts of contaminants are discharged during snowmelt and then reallocated within the receiving water body, either directly or after some temporal retention, depending on the characteristics of the receiving water. A calm water column and the presence of organic material in the receiving water body were crucial for the retention of metals.

Purpose

Rivers in low plains in the subtropical regions of China, where the population is dense and economies are active and well-developed, might be a large terrestrial carbon pool. This present study of the Sanyang wetlands in Wenzhou, southeastern China, aims to quantitatively estimate the volume of sediments in this region’s polluted river systems and their carbon storage.

Materials and methods

The bathymetry of river sections were surveyed using an echo sounder equipped with a differential GPS. An underwater digital elevation model (DEM) was then developed using the anisotropic ordinary Kriging method. Sediment samples were collected and analyzed for carbon content and sediment properties. Carbon storage in sediments was calculated using bathymetric and sediment analysis data.

Results and discussion

The studied rivers have been receiving organic pollutants from local residences and industries for decades. Results from a river network of 1.2 km2 revealed a total carbon storage of 46.7 million kg in the sediments which had a volume of 1.4 million m3, with the upper 20 cm depth of sediments contributing about one third of this carbon storage.

Conclusions

The present work demonstrated that GIS technologies can be used to create digital river sediment surfaces and assess sediment amounts as well as determine the spatial distribution of sediments and their components. This could provide further insight into river restoration planning and other options from a carbon-balance perspective.

Purpose

The particle-size distribution of runoff sediment is important in understanding, characterizing and modeling the transport behavior of sediment and sediment-associated chemicals. The objective of this study was to investigate the particle-size distribution of sediments eroded from three soils in China under natural rainfall.

Materials and methods

Each of the three soils was packed to a depth of 30 cm in a 20?×?2.1 m runoff plot. Sediments yielded in nine natural rainfall events were analyzed for their particle-size distribution prior to and following dispersion.

Results and discussion

The sediment size measured in the undispersed condition was always larger than the one determined after chemical dispersion, indicating that part of the sediment was eroded in aggregated form. The degree of sediment aggregation depended on the clay content and the organic matter content of the sources. The mean sediment size quantified by mean weight diameter linearly increased with sediment yield for the two soils with relatively high clay content. The rate of increase was greater in the undispersed condition than that in the dispersed condition for these two soils. Comparing sediments to the corresponding source soil, the results of mean weight diameter and enrichment ratio both revealed that aggregate-size distribution was more sensitive to soil erosion than the primary particle-size distribution. Small aggregates, rather than the primary particles, were selectively eroded in the rainfall events.

Conclusions

These findings support the use of both dispersed and undispersed sediment-size distributions for the characterization of sediment transport and the associated sediment-bound nutrients and contaminants.

Purpose

This paper presents the development of a turbid density current module (TDCM) for a one-dimensional quasi-steady reservoir sedimentation model suitable for long-term simulations and an example of its application.

Materials and methods

The module determines the plunging point of a density current based on the criterion of the densimetric Froude number. Following plunging, simulation continues in a supercritical regime as long as the energy of density flow and bed slope are sufficient to support transport in this mode, or until the dam is reached. A muddy pond is then formed. An adapted version of the theory of Toniolo et al. (2007) is used to compute water and sediment balance in a muddy pond. If the level of muddy pond exceeds the lowest level outlet, sediment is vented from the reservoir.

Results and discussion

The model was applied to one of the largest reservoirs in the world, the Nurek reservoir in Tajikistan. Historical data on bed levels and sediment inflow as well as a recent survey from 2015 were used to calibrate and validate the model. The model showed good results both in terms of modelled bed levels and composition of deposited sediment. For comparison purpose, the model was also calibrated without the TDCM module. However, the discrepancy between the observed and modelled data was significantly higher, confirming that the good match in the case of the TDCM module was not achieved solely by calibration, but rather by a more appropriate approach to modelling.

Conclusions

These results support the choice of using the model with TDCM for modelling a general pattern of long-term deposition in the Nurek reservoir, in which turbid density currents play an important role.

Purpose

Chromium, a potentially harmful element, occurs commonly within the urban sediment cascade as a result of abundant industrial and transport-related sources. The risks that Cr-bearing particles pose to ecosystems and humans depend on the solid-phase chemical speciation of Cr and its environmental mobility. In this study, we adopt an integrated geochemical approach to investigate and determine the long-term fate of Cr in the urban sediment cascade.

Materials and methods

We use bulk chemical digests, sequential chemical extraction analysis, electron microscopy, electron microprobe and microfocus XANES analysis to describe the solid-phase speciation, geochemical characteristics and potential long-term behaviour of Cr in urban particulate matter from both aquatic sediment and road dust sediment (RDS) in Manchester, UK.

Results and discussion

Cr-bearing grains within RDS and aquatic sediment are predominantly iron oxides and alumino-silicate glass grains. Electron microprobe analysis indicates Cr concentrations up to 3300 and 133,400 μg g?1 in the RDS and aquatic grains, respectively. XANES analysis indicates that Cr(III) is the dominant oxidation state, with only trace amounts of Cr(VI). Importantly, Cr speciation does not appear to have changed between sedimentary environments and the dominance of Cr(III) suggests limited bioavailability or toxicity under predominant environmental (anoxic and neutral pH) conditions in the aquatic sediment sink. Furthermore, geochemical analyses suggest the environmental mobility of Cr in the aquatic sediment sink is low (compared to other toxic metals) due to its association mainly with alumino-silicate glass grains and its inclusion as an integral part of the glass structure.

Conclusions

Industrial glass grains are a major component of urban sediment worldwide. The speciation and geochemical investigations performed in this study suggest most Cr within the urban sediment cascade may be resistant to environmental processes that could mobilise other toxic metals.

Purpose

Most of the information concerning the effects of contaminated sediments on estuarine organisms deals with the impacts of bed forming sediments. The ecotoxicological potential at the time of a dredging operation is more difficult to assess, and few studies have dealt specifically with resuspended contaminated sediments. The aim of this study was to determine whether release of contaminants through sediment resuspension during a dredging operation in the Itajaí-açu estuary (Brazil) changed the water quality classification and had an ecotoxicological impact on the near-field water column during the critical moment of this operation.

Materials and methods

Waters from two sites (control and dredged sites) were analyzed for physicochemical parameters before, during, and after a dredging operation. In parallel, a short-term, sensitive battery of biotests (bacteria, algae, and daphnids) was performed with water samples before and during this operation according to the ISO bioassay protocols.

Results and discussion

No short-term toxicity was observed with waters collected before or during the dredging operation. The results showed that desorption of contaminants from suspended particles of sediments with a low level of contamination during a dredging operation lowered the water quality in the near-field water column but that this did not promote significant acute toxicity effects on the organisms tested.

Conclusions

More detailed studies are needed (e.g., the question of the reliability of biotests under turbulent, particle-rich conditions) to fully understand this complex issue regarding water column ecotoxicity during the whole dredging operation and to support decisions on the management of dredging activities.

Purpose

Surface sediments contaminated with high levels of multiple heavy metal(loid) species are very common environmental problems. Especially, the labile and bioaccessible fractions of heavy metal(loid)s in the sediments are posing serious risks to the biota and the overlaying water quality. This study aimed at developing a potential method to manage the activity of the labile fractions of heavy metal(loid)s in surface sediments.

Materials and methods

This study assessed the feasibility of adding iron powder, a low-cost industrial by-product, to sediments containing high levels of Pb, As, and Cd to adsorb labile fractions of heavy metal(loid)s onto the sorbent surfaces and to retrieve the heavy metal(loid) laden powders by applying external magnetic field. In addition, the redistribution of Pb, Cd, and As in different sediment fractions, the dissolved fraction and the sorbent-adsorbed fraction, was also investigated and characterized.

Results and discussion

The results indicate that the bioactive labile fractions (exchangeable and carbonate-bound fractions) of heavy metal(loid)s are prone to concentrating onto iron powders and can be selectively removed from the sediments by magnetic retrieval. In addition, iron addition induces conversion of labile fractions of heavy metal(loid)s into more stabilized fractions.

Conclusions

Overall, the process can effectively minimize the activity of labile fractions of heavy metal(loid)s in surface sediments.

Purpose

Biochar is a carbon-rich product, able to enhance soil fertility and mitigate CO2 emissions. While biochar effects on agriculture are becoming known, its impact elsewhere, e.g., on estuarine ecosystems, has yet to be assessed. The main aim of the present study was to determine the effect of biochar on sediment–water retention, CO2 emissions from sedimentary organic carbon decomposition, sediment pH and electrical conductivity, in aerobic conditions similar to those observed at low tide.

Materials and methods

Sediments from the Mondego Estuary (Portugal) were mixed with pine gasification biochar at different doses (5, 10, 14 %) and immersed in water with different salinity values (15, 25, 30) for 96 h. The influence of biochar on water retention, the residence time of water and CO2 emissions between ?0.75 and ?1.5 MPa, total organic carbon, pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were determined. Carbon chemical composition and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations were determined in sediments and biochar. Differences between biochar treatments after immersion in different water salinities were analysed using the Kruskal–Wallis test.

Results and discussion

Results showed that biochar was able to (a) increase sediment–water content in terms of quantity and residence time, (b) decrease CO2 emissions, but only with a specific soil–water content and at the highest biochar dose, (c) increase sediment pH at all biochar doses and (d) increase sediment EC at the highest biochar dose. In contrast, the percentage of carbon mineralised was not modified. Biochar carbon was rich in PAHs and less decomposable than sedimentary carbon. The increments observed in sediment pH and EC were unable to change sediment alkaline or saline status according to standard classifications.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that the remarkable water adsorption capacity of biochar–sediment mixtures may be considered the main factor in regulating CO2 emission rates from sediments, together with high PAH concentrations, which probably restrain the organic matter decomposition process.

Purpose

Sediment transport and riverbed sedimentation were investigated in an alpine stream below a small hydropower reservoir desilted by a controlled sediment flushing (CSF) operation. The term “controlled” refers to the operational tasks implemented to mitigate the downstream environmental impact of the operation. The experimental dataset acquired before, during, and after the CSF was also used to carry out and calibrate a one-dimensional sediment transport model of the monitored event.

Materials and methods

The investigated reservoir is located in the central Italian Alps, and its original storage was 160,000 m3, about 30% filled by a mixture of sand and silt/clay before the CSF. Downstream sediment concentration was controlled by releasing clear water from upstream reservoirs and regulating the work of earth-moving equipment in the emptied reservoir. A 3.6-km-long reach with average slope of 0.015 was monitored: concentration and grain size of suspended sediment were measured during the CSF and the riverbed alteration was evaluated by volumetric sampling and measurements of the deposits’ thickness. Sedimentation and River Hydraulics—One Dimensional (SRH-1D) was used to simulate sediment transport during the monitored CSF. Model parameters were calibrated by comparing the computed and the observed amount of sediment deposited along the study reach.

Results and discussion

Sediment flushing was carried out in October 2010 for 3 days. Ca. 16,000 m3 of sediment were evacuated, representing approximately 30% silt/clay and 70% sand. 2.4 Mm3 of clear water was released to reduce sediment concentration and increase transport capacity downstream. About 3000 m3 of sand was deposited in the study reach after the CSF, with maximum height up to 0.2 m. Although the riverbed before the CSF was simply set as mono-granular, after calibrating the parameters, good agreement was achieved between the depositional pattern computed by SRH-1D and the one observed, both in terms of deposit thickness and grain size of deposited sediment. The sensitivity analysis revealed a major role of the parameters controlling bed mixing processes in affecting the simulated deposition after the CSF.

Conclusions

Sediment below 0.1 mm in diameter was not detected in river deposits after the flushing: the effects on river biota associated with substrate clogging by very fine sediment were therefore minimized. After proper calibration, 1-D sediment transport modeling can effectively support the planning of CSF operations: to minimize the downstream environmental effects, concurrently achieving acceptable flushing efficiency, the analyzed scenarios as well as the model outputs need to be carefully evaluated from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Purpose

The use of composted sewage sludge and limestone outcrop residue in land rehabilitation, soil improvement, and technosol making can influence the mobility of nitrogen compounds in groundwater.

Materials and methods

This experiment analyzed this source of possible pollution under an experimental design based on the use of columns (0–30 cm) formed by both wastes and a heavy irrigation regime. Two waters of different quality (saline and non-saline) were used for irrigation. The presence of nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium in the leachates was checked.

Results and discussion

The environmental risk due to the presence of nitrogen species associated with the use of these materials was very low in general, although nitrate was the most important compound affected by the use of sewage sludge compost and saline water.

Conclusions

The combination of saline water for irrigation with the compost has to be seriously considered as a source of pollution for surface and ground waters, and the use of both resources may be a key factor to be studied (low-quality water and sewage sludge compost).
