The possible adverse effect of arsenical tick control dips on Parafilaria bovicola infections was investigated in 48 artificially infected cattle. A treatment group of 24 cattle was dipped in a plunge dip containing 1600 ppm arsenic trioxide. A control group of the same size was dipped in an organophosphate dip containing a mixture of chlorfenvinphos and dioxathion. Regular weekly to 3-weekly dipping had no effect initially on the prevalence of ovipositional blood spots of P. bovicola in either group. However, from 4 months after bleeding commenced there was a significant reduction in blood spots in the arsenic-dipped cattle and, on slaughter at 12-14 months after infection, the arsenic group had significantly fewer live worms and fewer carcass lesions. Arsenic residues in muscle samples of treated cattle were 11.6 times higher than in the controls. It is proposed that arsenic residues in the sub-cutaneous muscle layers increase with repeated dipping until a level toxic to P. bovicola is finally reached. Older cattle would therefore be refractory to infection and their carcasses at slaughter would not be affected.  相似文献

In two field trials vaccination or different anthelmintic treatments against Dictyocaulus viviparus infections were used in 6 groups of first year grazing cattle. The antibody response to lungworm infections was determined using an ELISA. Cattle treated once or repeatedly at long intervals with levamisole developed clinical signs of dictyocaulosis. The detection of anti-D. viviparus antibodies at the end of the grazing season confirmed that these anthelmintic treatments were not able to prevent lungworm infections. Cattle that received strategically administered treatments with ivermectin remained clinically healthy. These cattle were seronegative until the end of the trial which proved the efficacy of the strategic control. Cattle that received an intraruminal slow release bolus did not develop clinical disease. However one animal shed lungworm larvae and the herd became seropositive at the end of the grazing season indicating a history of infection. The serological examination of a cattle herd at the end of the grazing season is able to demonstrate a history of lungworm infections and to determine the efficacy of anthelmintic control measures.  相似文献

Surveys to determine the prevalence and degree of resistance of Haemonchus spp. of sheep and goats to the available anthelmintics in South Africa indicate that small ruminant production is entering a crisis situation. Three surveys employing the faecal egg count reduction (FECR) test to determine resistance were conducted in some of the main sheep-producing areas in the summer rainfall region of South Africa, where H. contortus is the principal worm species in sheep. After analyzing the data recorded in the surveys by six different methods, including the RESO test at two different levels of confidence, the results obtained in the least stringent one (geometric mean reduction of the worm egg counts of drenched, vs untreated group of sheep) are reported in this paper, so that if any bias was obtained it would be in the favour of the anthelmintic. In Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal there was anthelmintic resistance in Haemonchus spp. on all the 52 farms surveyed. Sixteen percent of the strains of H. contortus were < 60% susceptible to three of the four anthelmintics tested, and 8% of the strains were < 40% susceptible to all four of the anthelmintics. FECR tests of sheep in six localities in the Lebowa district of Northern Province indicated that even in previously disadvantaged communities where anthelmintic treatment is less intensive, anthelmintic resistance is developing, and is possibly at the level at which the situation on commercial sheep and goat farms in South Africa was 25 years ago. From the data it appears that the level of anthelmintic resistance of H. contortus in South Africa is possibly the highest that has so far been recorded in the world and that strains of it are emerging that may soon not be controllable by treatment with any of the existing anthelmintics. Farmers in the summer rainfall region, if not the whole country, must be alerted to the immediate need for testing the parasite burdens of their sheep for susceptibility to preparations in all four groups of anthelmintic compounds currently available. Alternative methods of integrated worm control, including biological, must be sought and implemented with urgency, to reduce further selection for resistance and to induce reversion of the resistance that has already developed.  相似文献

Four trials, three in the United States and one in South Africa, were conducted to evaluate the potential value of a novel self-medicating applicator in the passive control of gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle and deer, and of files and ticks on cattle using oil-based treatments. The results of the trials demonstrated that this applicator is an effective and practical device for the passive treatment of both deer and cattle for trichostrongyle infections using the endectocide, moxidectin (Cydectin. Fort Dodge Animal Health, USA), of cattle for hom fly (Haemotobia irritans) infestations using the insecticide, cyfluthrin (CyLence, Bayer AG, Germany) and of cattle for tick infestations (in particular Amblyomma hebraeum and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus) using the acaricides deltamethrin and amitraz (Delete All, Intervet, South Africa).  相似文献

Parafilaria bovicola was recorded in Swedish cattle for the first time in 1978. The parasite causes carcass lesions with a maximum incidence from February to July but already in the previous November the carcass lesions appear regularly in the form of yellow oedema. In February and onward the oedema may be extensive with a greenish-yellow colour. The lesions are most prominent in bulls and more or less negligible in cows. However, the cows are considered to be important reservoirs for the parasite from one season to the next. Bleedings are seen from March until August and the infective larvae are transmitted to the cattle from early June by the intermediate host Musca autumnalis. Parafilaria lesions look remarkably like those caused by contusions during handling and transport previous to slaughter. Eosinophile infiltrations can be regarded as a constant diagnostic feature of parafilariosis.  相似文献

Worm control practices and anthelmintic usage in 177 cattle farms in Iringa district in the southern highlands of Tanzania was determined through a questionnaire survey. A total of 76 traditional, 92 small-scale dairy and 9 large-scale dairy cattle farms were included in the survey. Results indicated that 87.7% traditional, 97.8% small-scale dairy and 100% large-scale farmers relied solely on the use of anthelmintics, 2.7% traditional farmers used traditional medicines while 9.6% traditional farmers had not any form of worm control practice. Worm infection was ranked the second most important constraint of productivity in cattle in the three production systems. Most farms (57.6% traditional, 35.8% small-scale dairy, 66.7% large-scale dairy) used anthelmintics with a combination of levamisole and oxyclozanide. Benzimidazoles were used only in traditional (25.4%) and small-scale dairy (32.1%) farms while nitroxynil (Trodax) was mostly used in large-scale dairy farms (33.3%). Generally, 40% of farmers treated three or four times a year and the frequency in some farms was surprisingly high for resource poor small-scale farmers. The frequency of anthelmintic treatment was mostly the same regardless of the management system. Treatments in most farms depended on availability of money and drugs and not the epidemiology of parasites. A significant proportion (46.3%, P=0.007) of farmers especially in rural areas failed to follow their pre-planned treatment schedules due to lack of money (86%) and unavailability of drugs (6.6%). Many farmers (58.9%) had used the same type of anthelmintic for four or more consecutive years and 85.3% of them would continue with the same anthelmintic. Farmers in all management systems mostly purchased anthelmintics from private veterinary drug shops and about 43% traditional and 33.3% small-scale dairy farmers mostly in rural areas obtained anthelmintics from village extension officers. Despite the fact that all farmers were aware of worm infection and the associated signs in cattle, 42.5% had poor knowledge on the source of worm infection. Small-scale dairy farmers allowed only a 1-day withdraw period for milk regardless of the type of anthelmintic used and there was no milk and slaughter clearance in traditional farms. It was concluded from this study that worm control in Iringa faces serious constrains and that education of farmers and farm hands is not adequate. Moreover, poor quality control and high price of potent anthelmintics, few extension workers, low income and low education among farmers contributed significantly to erratic worm control practices and anthelmintic usage in peri-urban and rural areas.  相似文献

Before revised World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP) guidelines on the detection of anthelmintic resistance can be produced, validation of modified and new methods is required in laboratories in different parts of the world. There is a great need for improved methods of detection of anthelmintic resistance particularly for the detection of macrocyclic lactone resistance and for the detection of resistant nematodes in cattle. Therefore, revised and new methods are provided here for the detection of anthelmintic resistance in nematodes of ruminants, horses and pigs as a basis for discussion and with the purpose that they are evaluated internationally to establish whether they could in the future be recommended by the WAAVP. The interpretation of the faecal egg count reduction test has been modified and suggestions given on its use with persistent anthelmintics and continuous release devices. An egg hatch test for benzimidazole (BZ) resistance is described. A microagar larval development test for the detection of benzimidazole and levamisole resistance provides third stage larvae for the identification of resistant worms. The sensitivity of these two tests can be increased by using discriminating doses rather than LD(50) values. Details are given of a PCR based test for the analysis of benzimidazole resistance in strongyles of sheep and goats, horses and cattle. Although promising for ruminant trichostrongyles, quantitative determination of gene frequency using real time PCR requires further development before PCR tests will be used in the field. Apart from faecal egg count reduction tests there are currently no satisfactory tests for macrocylic lactone resistance despite the great importance of this subject. Except for treatment and slaughter trials there are no validated tests for fasciolicide resistance or for the detection of resistance in cestodes.  相似文献

Seven trials including 768 cattle were conducted in South Africa and Namibia to evaluate the efficacy of the systemic parasiticide ivermectin when administered subcutaneously at a dose rate of 200 micrograms/kg against sarcoptic (Sarcoptes scabiei var. bovis), chorioptic (Chorioptes bovis) and psoroptic (Psoroptes ovis var. bovis) mange mites. The efficacy of a single treatment against Psoroptes and Sarcoptes was greater than against Chorioptes. There was marked clinical cure in all treated cases with loss of crusts and hair regrowth. The number of cases of psoroptic mange in two large herds, of which 42.4% of 724 animals were clinically affected prior to mass treatment, was reduced by 99.3% following a single subcutaneous treatment with ivermectin; a single animal from which mites were recovered may not have been treated. The apparent prevalence and prospects for control and eradication of cattle mange in South Africa and Namibia are discussed.  相似文献

The duration of the anthelmintic activity of abamectin administered by subcutaneous injection at 200 microg/kg was determined using induced infections of Haemonchus placei, Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia spp., and Oesophagostomum radiatum in cattle. Twenty-four Friesian calves, raised under worm-free conditions, were assigned to four groups of six animals using a randomised block design based on bodyweight. One group acted as untreated controls and the other three were treated with abamectin 14, 10 or 7 days before infection. At slaughter, 50-52 days after treatment (36-38 days after infection), efficacy was greater than 98-99% against all the parasite species for the groups challenged 10 and 7 days after treatment, whereas no significant activity could be demonstrated 14 days after treatment.  相似文献

While surveys in Southern Africa indicate anthelmintic resistance of gastrointestinal nematodes to be common in small ruminants in South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe there have been no reports of resistance in Zambia. The objective of this study was to determine whether anthelmintic resistance occurs in Zambia, and to obtain information on nematode control practices in the country. During the rainy season six commercial sheep farms were selected in and around Lusaka and Chisamba. Worm control practices were gauged by means of a questionnaire, and the Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test was performed for assessing anthelmintic efficacy of albendazole, levamisole and ivermectin. On all farms anthelmintic treatment was the only approach used to control nematode infections. Frequency of treatment varied from twice a year to every 6 weeks and drugs of different anthelmintic groups were alternated within the same year. There was a wide range in faecal egg counts of individual sheep before treatment, with some individual counts of up to 87000. Larval identification showed that Haemonchus was almost the only genus recovered from the faecal cultures before and after treatment. Albendazole resistance was found on five of the six farms. On each of the four farms where ivermectin gave less than 95% reduction in egg counts, there was resistance to albendazole as well. Levamisole showed an efficacy of 95% or higher on all six farms.  相似文献

Comparative controlled trials were undertaken to establish whether resistance to reinfection can develop in cattle following anthelmintic treatment of a primary lungworm infection. Levamisole proved more effective than diethylcarbamazine.  相似文献

Evidence for the genetic control of resistance of sheep to gastrointestinal nematode infections was reviewed and compared with that of cattle to infestation with the cattle tick. Variation within sheep breeds in resistance to nematode infection is as great as that between breeds, is moderately heritable, and selection of lines of resistant sheep should result in animals carrying worm burdens around 10%-20% of those of unselected animals. The consequences of genetically resistant sheep for the epidemiology of Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection were examined with the aid of a simulation model. Predicted results were similar to those observed in cattle herds resistant to Boophilus microplus; seasonal peaks in parasite burdens were greatly reduced, and larval numbers on pasture were reduced even further. The use of genetically resistant hosts should permit a reduced frequency of anthelmintic treatment, and hence reduce the rate of development of anthelmintic resistance in the parasite.  相似文献

The research activities of the Veterinary Research Institute, Onderstepoort, from its inception in 1908 until recent times are reviewed in this first article of a series on nematode epidemiology of sheep and cattle. While the taxonomic and certain biological aspects of the subject and the testing of anthelmintic compounds have been well covered on the whole in various parts of the country, the testing of control methods under field conditions has largely been neglected. It is suggested that all known methods of integrated worm control should be scrutinized and the most promising methods be tested under practical farming conditions in the country to reduce our dependence on anthelmintic compounds for worm control. Furthermore, unless we are able to employ the available anthelmintics to better advantage and thus reduce the tempo of selection for resistance, the situation may well develop where highly effective remedies are no longer available for worm control.

Ivermectin, either as an injectable or topical formulation, is used widely to control parasites in New Zealand cattle. These formulations have been well documented as having high efficacy against the major nematode species which infect tattle(1)(2)(3)(4), although the efficacy against adult Cooperia oncophora is reported to be 95%(5). This is considered to be one of the doselimiting species. There have been two reports of lower than expected efficacy of the topical formulation against Cooperia spp. in cattle. In a slaughter trial, Bisset et al. (6) found that ivermectin applied topically at the recommended dose rate of 500 𝛍g/kg failed to achieve a statistically significant reduction in the burden of Cooperia spp. worms compared with untreated calves. The geometric mean of adult Cooperia spp. worms present in the treated calves was 5788 compared with 7524 present in the untreated calves. This reduced efficacy was not attributed to acquired anthelmintic resistance because ivermectin had not been used on the farm previously. In Australia, Eagleson and Allertonc(7) found in controlled field trials that ivermectin applied topically at 500 𝛍g/kg ranged in efficiency in reducing faecal egg counts from 80.7% to 100% ; four out of 13 trials achieving less than 90% and a further four were in the range of 90–95% reduction. Larvae obtained from the faeces of ivermectin-treated cattle on days 11–14 after treatment were predominantly Cooperia spp.  相似文献

AIM: To estimate the prevalence of Neospora infection in a sample of New Zealand beef cattle. METHODS: The prevalence of Neospora caninum infection in New Zealand beef cattle was estimated by collecting blood at slaughter from 499 beef cattle from 40 different farms at 2 slaughter plants in the North Island and 1 in the lower South Island . Sera were tested using an ELISA against Neospora tachyzoite antigen. RESULTS: The prevalence of seropositive cattle was 2.5% (n=120), 3.6% (n=166) and 2.3% (n=213) at the plants surveyed, the overall prevalence being 2.8%. The serologically positive cattle came from 9 farms, 3 of which had more than 1 positive animal. The highest prevalence recorded amongst animals from 1 farm was 4/13 (31%), in a group of young steers. CONCLUSION: Neosporosis appears to be present at a lower level in the New Zealand beef cattle population than in the New Zealand dairy cattle population. Nevertheless, from the high seroprevalence evident amongst young cattle on 1 farm, we suggest that Neospora may be a cause of infertility in beef cattle in this country.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal parasitic infection is highly prevalent in the North Eastern States (NEH) of India and accounted for significant economic losses across various livestock species. Productivity of cattle in terms of milk yield was estimated to be considerably higher (3,715, 3,590, and 3,154 L) due to strategic anthelmintic treatment as compare to control group (2,928 L). Based on the probability of occurrence of parasitic infection as well as increase in value of milk production, the possible economic gain at state level has been estimated to be Rs. 46 million, Rs. 35 million, and Rs. 14 million, depending upon the different strategic treatment. The government may take up the program to educate the cattle farmers on strategic management against parasitic infecion and simultaneously making available various anthelmintic medicines. This public responsibility of the government to minimize the risk and economic loss due to gastrointestinal parasite infection may reduce the private cost and thereby would increase the social benefits in North Eastern states of India.  相似文献

A survey was conducted on the occurrence of anthelmintic resistance of nematodes in communally grazed goats in a semi-arid area in South Africa. In herds belonging to 10 small-holder goat farmers, the efficacies of fenbendazole, levamisole and rafoxanide were tested by faecal egg count reduction (FECR) tests. Efficacies of 80% were considered a threshold for anthelmintic resistance. The FECR tests showed that all drugs tested more than 80% effective in most instances, but there were notable exceptions. In 1 case, rafoxanide was only 31% effective and in another case fenbendazole was only 47% effective. The occurrence of anthelmintic resistance in this farming sector is of concern. Steps should be taken to prevent its further spread and to avoid the development of a situation as on numerous commercial sheep farms in South Africa where resistance is very common.  相似文献

The efficacy of the first of a new generation of intraruminal devices for cattle, the morantel sustained release trilaminate, was assessed in two field trials. In each trial the animals were divided into a control group and a treated group. The device was administered to each calf before turn out in the spring and the reduction of gastrointestinal parasitism resulted in a substantial reduction in the level of pasture contamination with infective helminth larvae later in the season. Compared with the control calves the treated calves had a 94 per cent reduction of worm burdens acquired over the entire grazing season in the first trial, despite the controls being treated for clinical disease in September. In the second trial four anthelmintic treatments were administered to the control calves during the grazing season, but nevertheless a 64 per cent reduction of worm burdens in the treated group compared to the control group was recorded. The control of parasitic infection by the sustained-release devices resulted in mean weight gain advantages of 28.3 kg and 34.7 kg by the treated animals in the first and second trials respectively.  相似文献

Two trials involving housed cattle examined the effect of Co depletion and supplementation on immune status as assessed by the neutrophil function test which measures the ability of isolated neutrophils to kill the yeast Candida albicans. A third trial investigated the extent to which Co status influenced the severity of Ostertagia ostertagi infection. In the first two trials liveweight gains were unaffected until some 40-60 weeks on the low dietary Co intake despite very low serum vitamin B12 values being recorded after 10 weeks. However, the immune status as measured by the neutrophil function test was reduced within 10 weeks of commencing the low Co diet. On administration of Ostertagia ostertagi larvae, Co-depleted cattle showed a greater weight loss than Co-supplemented cattle but showed no difference in the length of the prepatent period, worm egg production or serum gastrin and pepsinogen concentrations. After anthelmintic treatment both groups showed a similar response. It is postulated that the lowered immune response of Co-depleted cattle resulted in the greater severity of the Ostertagia ostertagi infection.  相似文献
