Bambara groundnut an indigenous crop of African origin is drought tolerant and the third most important leguminous crop in Ghana and Sub-Saharan Africa. In order to assess the level of genetic diversity within a small collection of Ghanaian landraces, molecular analysis was performed using microsatellite markers alongside characterization of morphological features. Genetic distance based on Jaccard’s similarity coefficient from the SSR marker analysis ranged from 0.48 to 0.9 among the landraces. 80 individual genotypes were clustered into 17 units with substantial levels of inter- and intra-landrace polymorphism. The analyses of variance from the morphological characterization for all quantitative traits were statistically significant (p < 0.05) except for terminal leaflet width. The first 4 principal components accounted for 41.97, 20.15, 13.39 and 9.81 % respectively of the morphological variations among the landraces. Qualitative traits however accounted for less of these variations. The results of the present study support the availability of high level of polymorphism within the collection of bambara groundnut analysed. This report is useful to crop improvement and germplasm conservation of bambara groundnut in Ghana.  相似文献

Bambara groundnut has great potential as an alternative crop for improving food security in its production regions and beyond. A field experiment was conducted at the Field Research Centre of the Crops for the Future to obtain information on the nitrogen (N) fixation and N balance of Bambara groundnut landraces on tropical acidic soils of Malaysia. Treatments consisted of three Bambara groundnut landraces (Ex-Sokoto, Kaaro, and NN-1) laid out in a randomized complete block design replicated three times. Results obtained revealed that Ex-Sokoto landrace was greater in yield and N fixation, whereas N balance (-haulm) was greater in NN-1 landrace. The results revealed grain yield of 703–2256 kg ha?1 and N fixation from 32–81 kg ha?1 and suggest that Bambara groundnut could be integrated into a cereal-based cropping system. Ex-Sokoto landrace appeared to be the most promising for yield and N fixation under Malaysian acidic soil conditions.  相似文献

Variability study of agro-morphological characteristics is important for varietal improvement and plant breeding program. For this, 148 chili pepper landraces (Capsicum annuum L.) collected from Northern Benin were characterized using 39 (21 qualitative and 18 quantitative) morphological characters. The trial was conducted in a Fisher block design with 3 replicates at the experimental station of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FAST) of Dassa based in Central Benin. The results revealed considerable morphological variability between landraces. Twenty nine (16 quantitative and 13 qualitative) variables among the 39 examined were discriminatory and group the landraces into 4 classes when considering the qualitative variables. With quantitative variables, 9 groups were obtained. The correlations between the studied quantitative variables show that the yield parameters are correlated with the variables related to the vegetative part of the plant. This study will help breeders to better select their parents for crossing in order to produce desirable and high yielding varieties.  相似文献

Lima bean is a species cultivated broadly in the Americas and has been cultivated in the Caribbean for at least 500 years. In order to determine the genetic structure and diversity of Lima bean from the Caribbean, 50 landraces from Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico were collected and analyzed using 24 SSR markers. All landraces in this Caribbean collection were found to be of Middle-American descent. The genetic diversity (HE) was highest in the landraces from Puerto Rico and lowest in Haitian landraces. The observed proportion of heterozygotes (HO) was higher in the Haitian landraces and lowest in Puerto Rican landraces. Unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic averaging analysis showed that the landraces clustered into 3 clusters with all Haitian landraces grouping in one cluster. We also assessed the agro-morphological characteristics of the collection as well as the content of cyanogenic glucoside, linamarin, in leaves and dry seeds. Lima bean, which is a model crop for indirect plant defenses against herbivory, also possess linamarin as a source of direct plant defense. Upon tissue damage, linamarin is converted to toxic hydrogen cyanide. In our collection 44.6 % of the landraces had average seed HCN content ≤200 ppm which is the permitted level for Lima bean seed in the US. Our results also identified the landraces in this collection which have high linamarin levels in the leaves while having low levels in the seeds. Such landraces have the desirable combination of traits and will be the focus of our future plans for agronomic trait improvement though breeding.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted in Tanzania for two seasons to assess the genetic diversity of bambara groundnut landraces based on morphological characters. One hundred accessions collected from a wide range of agricultural zones in the country were evaluated in a 10 × 10 triple lattice block design at Maruku station in Bukoba, Tanzania. For the qualitative characters evaluated, considerable morphological variations were observed for growth habit, pod shape and pod colour. Quantitative morphological characters such as peduncle length, number of leaves per plant, terminal leaflet width, terminal leaflet length, petiole length, plant spread, plant length, pod width, seed length, seed width, number of pods per plant, shelling percentage and days to 50% flowering showed significant variation among accessions for the two test seasons. Multivariate analysis for 15 quantitative morphological traits that showed significant variation indicated that the first four PCs with eigenvalues ≥1 accounted for 63.0 and 65.0% of the total variance among the accessions during the two test seasons, respectively. The most important loadings for PC1 and PC2 for the two seasons were terminal leaflet width, terminal leaflet length, petiole length, plant spread, plant height and pod length, pod width, seed length, seed width, numbers of pods per plant. Cluster analysis grouped bambara groundnut accessions into three major groups with respect to their geographic origins. Based on this present study, bambara groundnut landraces from Tanzania displayed a considerable diversity for morphological and agronomic traits useful for germplasm management and utilization into crop improvement.  相似文献

The genebank at ICRISAT conserves the largest collection of 23,092 pearl millet germplasm accessions originating in 52 countries. A total of 15,979 landraces originating in 34 countries and having geographic coordinates of the collection sites were selected to investigate the geographical distribution of pearl millet traits and diversity in the collection. Results revealed adaptation of pearl millet to latitudes ranging between 33.00°S and 36.91°N. Landraces with early flowering (33–40 days) were predominant in Pakistan, Ghana, Togo and India; with very late flowering (121–159 days) in Sierra Leone and the Central African Republic; with short plant height (80–100 cm) in India, Zambia and Sudan; with tallness (401–490 cm) in Chad, Burkina Faso, Nigeria and the Central African Republic; with high tillering (11–35) in India and Yemen; with high panicle exsertion (11–29 cm) in Ghana, Chad, India and Yemen; with long panicles (75–135 cm) in Nigeria and Niger; with thick panicles (41–58 mm) in Namibia, Togo and Zimbabwe and those with large seeds (16–19 g 1000 seeds?1) were predominant in Togo, Benin, Ghana and Burkina Faso. Collections from Ghana for flowering (36–150 days), Burkina Faso for plant height (80–490), India and Yemen for total (1–35) and productive (1–19) tillers per plant, Niger for panicle exsertion (?45 to 21.0), panicle length (9–135 cm) and thickness (12–55 mm) and Zimbabwe for 1000 seed weight (3.5–19.3 g), were found as important sources for trait diversity. Launching collection missions for trait-specific germplasm is suggested to enrich the world collection of pearl millet at ICRISAT genebank for diversity.  相似文献

Sesame seeds are an excellent food and non-food raw material, for which there is a consolidated deficit in Italy and in other European Union countries. For this reason, a 2-years experiment was conducted in Sicily to compare the agronomic performance (phenology, morphological and productive traits) and grain quality (oil and its main constituents, protein of defatted flour, fibre) of three landraces, one of Turkish origin and two Sicilian (“Ispica” and “Modica”), and two improved varieties (‘Pachequino’ and ‘Yori 77’). The landraces evidenced earliness (115 days) and the greater height of insertion of first capsule (0.52 m), whereas the variety ‘Pachequino’ was the most productive (3.5 t ha?1). Turkish and “Ispica” landraces and ‘Yori 77’ variety provided seeds with greater lipid (54 %, on average) and protein contents (44 % on defatted flour, on average). ‘Pachequino’ and both Sicilian landraces produced seeds richer in fibre fractions. As regard to oil quality, the oleic acid/linoleic acid was found balanced (about 1) for Turkish landrace, and it decreased for the other cultivars reaching the lowest value for ‘Pachequino’. “Modica” had higher quantity of unsaponifiable matter (1.98 %) in the oil, whereas ‘Yori 77’ had the maximum concentration of phytosterols (5532.8 mg kg?1). Policosanol fraction prevailed in oil of “Ispica” (205.8 mg kg?1). Moreover, there was variability in the fatty acid, sterol and policosanol compositions with differences among the cultivars. Research provide information to exploit sesame within agrosystems under Mediterranean climates, and may be a starting point for breeding activity to enhance crop productivity and grain quality.  相似文献

Optimum quantity of fertilizers and irrigation water to minimize the cost and increase the production is need of the day. Consequently, an experiment was conducted at CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar during the winter season of 2014–15 and 2015–16 to study the effect of irrigation schedules and fertilizer levels on coriander. Irrigation at 25, 50, 75, and 100 days after sowing (DAS) gave higher growth and yield attributing characters, seed yield (16.48 q/ha), biological yield (50.79 q/ha), net return (Rs. 138,950.6), and benefit to cost ratio (2.36), which resulted in 40.9% and 15.3% increase in seed and biological yield over two irrigations, respectively. The application of fertilizers, i.e., N60 and P50 kg/ha, registered higher growth, seed yield attributes, consumptive use of water, whereas, net return and benefit to cost ratio was recorded maximum under fertilizers, i.e., N75 and P62.5 kg/ha. The interaction effect of irrigation and fertilizer on seeds per umbellet and seed yield was also found to be significantly positive. Hence, in Northern Plains of India four irrigations at 25, 50, 75, and 100 DAS in association with nitrogen 75 kg/ha and phosphorus 62.5 kg/ha is more profitable in coriander crop.  相似文献

At the mountain area close to the city of Madrid, common beans were one of the main food crops present in everyday diet until 1960. This paper describes the morphological diversity, for forty-six phenological and morphological traits, found in forty-three traditional varieties of common beans collected in this area and seven commercial varieties used as reference. That comparison suggests that common bean breeding programs have led to later varieties with a higher production of straight pods. Quantitative traits showed also similar values when compared to the Iberian common bean collection, except for the phenological and seed size characters. The phenological differences could suggest an ecological adaptation of the studied landraces to the regional environmental conditions. The different seed size averages of both collections might correspond to the scarce presence of smaller seed-type common beans in Madrid collection. All the accessions collected in the Sierra Norte of Madrid belong to any of the groups included in the Spanish core collection. Madrilenian collection is also composed by indeterminate growth habit varieties, while the presence of bush accessions is relatively uncommon. Most of the Madrilenian landraces have a remarkable fitness for green-pod consumption (42 %) and their seeds are mainly white (30 %), ovate-shape (49 %) and medium-large (40 %). The study of seed storage protein allowed to classify the landraces according to their domesticated gene pools. Most of them (72 %), with T and C phaseolin type, seem to belong to Andean germplasm, while the remaining (28 %), with S and B phaseolin type, to Mesoamerican one. The remarkable morphological diversity of common beans found in this small area is a symptom of a broad genetic base despite genetic erosion, what indicates a widespread crop in the past. Therefore, it is advisable to design agro-environmental policies to promote the production and commercialization of common bean landraces in Sierra Norte of Madrid.  相似文献

The potential of bambara groundnut as a crop-based approach for the sustainable reduction of protein–energy malnutrition prevalent in Nigeria is still being explored. However, one of the limitations to sustainable production of this adapted species is low and unstable yield. Here, we employed multiple statistical analyses to determine traits that could be useful in predicting grain yield. Furthermore, additive main effect and multiplicative interaction and genotype × genotype × environment models were used to identify high yielding and stable landraces. Twenty-four bambara landraces were evaluated in two contrasting dry land growing seasons at four environments. Based on the results of correlation, path coefficient values and stepwise multiple regression analysis, it is reasonable to assume that seed growth rate would be effective as indirect selection criteria for grain yield improvement in this set of breeding materials under early and late planting environment. However, optimizing biomass growth rate, pod fill period, 100-seed weight, number of pods per plant and time to flowering may have important role in the improvement of grain yield in bambara groundnut. Due consideration should be given to 100-seed weight and time to flowering in the early dry and late planting environment. The possibility of successful cultivation of bambara groundnut in forest–savannah transition agricultural zone of Nigeria, particularly when planting is done around early August has been established in this study. However, based on the strong association between seed yield and its related characters in early and late planting environments, selection for higher seed growth rate combined with large number of pods appears to be the best indirect traits when selecting bambara groundnut plants to enhance grain yield under early and late planting environments. While landraces TVSu 1520 and 1578 were considered the best adapted landraces, TVSu 1670 and 1518 are promising landraces that could contribute to increasing grain yield stability.  相似文献

Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.) is one of the important legume crop grown in marginal soils of sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its importance in food security and income generation for small scale farmers, it remains as a neglected and underutilized crop and the productivity is very low in the field due to the lack of improved varieties and lack adequate farming practices. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate all aspects related to its production including source of seeds supply and farmers management practices, utilization, conservation and marketing. The results revealed that in this Region of Western Niger Bambara groundnut was mainly produced by female (95%) compared to male (5%). Farmers use their own recycled seed (80%) which is the main source followed by provision of recycled seeds by relatives (5%) and purchasing from the local market (15%). Also, this finding shows that there is a lack of adequate farming practices and the crop is mostly produced on inherited land without any inputs as reported by 80% of the respondents. Mono-cropping is mainly practiced by 97% of farmers while a few of them do rotation (2%) and most of pre and postharvest handling technologies are traditional. The most important traits preferred by Bambara farmers is seed colour (cream color), followed by high grain yield, early maturity and cooking ability according to the respondents with 98, 92, 88 and 72% respectively. Several features have to be taking into account in order to promote Bambara nut including its ability to do well in harsh conditions, its nutritional benefits, and its ability to fix nitrogen, thereby increasing soil fertility in mixed cropping systems.  相似文献

Farmers who still cultivate bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea) rely on landraces and seed retained from previous harvests. Given that the crop is typically cultivated in semi-arid regions, seed quality of farmers' retained seed might be compromised due to water stress experienced by maternal plants during production. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of water stress on maternal plants on subsequent seed quality of bambara groundnut. A single bambara groundnut landrace was characterised into four distinct selections based on seed coat and speckling colour. Initial seed quality (viability and vigour) was evaluated prior to planting seed in a field trial under irrigated and rainfed conditions. Final yield and yield components were determined at harvest. Thereafter, seed quality (viability and vigour) of progeny of different landrace selections was evaluated. Yield was lower under rainfed than irrigated conditions. Overall, subsequent seed quality showed improvement from initial seed quality of the original seedlot. Seed viability was higher in seeds produced under irrigated than rainfed conditions. Seed quality of bambara groundnut may be reduced underwater-limited production conditions. Seed enhancement practices such as priming may assist farmers to achieve better emergence. In the long term, seed production should be done under optimum conditions in order to achieve high-seed quality.  相似文献

Ninety-five common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) landraces from Spain were evaluated in three different environments in northern Spain for their agronomic performance and seed quality. Significant differences among landraces were found for 14 quantitative traits related to phenology, yield and its components, and seed quality traits. Environmental effects were significant for all traits evaluated except for seeds pod?1, seed width/thickness, seed weight, and seed water absorption. Landrace by environment interactions were significant for all traits except for seeds pod?1 and seed water absorption. Selection of new breeding lines for agronomic performance and seed quality within landraces should be reliable because many of them are mixture of lines. Some heirloom varieties belonging to the types faba, caparrón,riñón,ganxet and tolosana had the best performances regarding to seed quality and yield. Principal component analysis revealed differences among environments affecting the performance of the bean landraces. Variation in the landraces seems to be organized in a different way in each one of the test environments, therefore, low plasticity and specific adaptation of Spanish bean landraces to different environments is derived from this study. Some landraces, especially those large and white seeded should be an useful resource for sustainable farming systems in different biogeographical areas and a worthy germplasm for the genetic improvement of agronomic value and seed quality.  相似文献

Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L. Verdc) is the second most important indigenous food legume in Africa. The aim of this study was to evaluate plant growth, N2 fixation, N contribution, C accumulation, and plant water relations of Bambara groundnut grown in 26 farmers’ fields in Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. The data revealed marked (p?≤?0.05) differences in plant dry matter (DM) yield, N concentration and content, δ15N, the proportion of N derived from symbiotic fixation (%Ndfa), and actual amounts of N-fixed between and among the 26 farms surveyed. Bambara groundnut plants obtained 33–98 % (mean?=?72 %) of their N nutrition from symbiotic fixation and contributed 4–200 kg N-fixed ha?1 (mean?=?102 kg N-fixed ha?1). Plant density correlated positively with %N (r?=?0.31***), δ15N (r?=?0.126***), and amount of N-fixed (r?=?0.15*), indicating that the high %Ndfa values obtained for Bambara groundnut in this study and the low symbiotic N yield associated with some farms were due to low plant density rather than poor symbiotic functioning. Bambara groundnut obtained more N from soil (e.g., 173 kg N ha?1) than from symbiosis (e.g., 135 kg N-fixed ha?1) in some fields, implying that the N2-fixing efficacy of the microsymbionts nodulating Bambara groundnut was low at some locations in South Africa. The data from this study showed δ13C values ranging from ?28.01 to ?26.20?‰, which indicates differences in plant water use efficiency on the different fields studied. Furthermore, the positive correlations between δ13C and N-fixed (r?=?0.15*) and between δ13C and N content (r?=?0.14*) suggest a functional relationship between water use efficiency and N2 fixation, just as the positively significant correlations between δ15N and DM yield (r?=?0.24***), N-fixed and DM weight (r?=?0.76**), and N content and DM yield (r?=?0.99*), as well as N-fixed and C content (r?=?0.76**) also indicate a functional relationship between N2 fixation and photosynthesis. In the same way, the positive correlation between δ13C and DM weight (r?=?0.14*), or δ13C and C content (r?=?0.15*), also implies a functional link between water use efficiency and plant growth. Thus, an increase in water use efficiency in Bambara groundnut, whenever it occurs, seems to functionally enhance plant growth, symbiotic N2 fixation, and photosynthetic activity, just as N2 fixation in nodules also seems to stimulate leaf photosynthesis.  相似文献

In plants, apical dominance prevents the development of lateral shoots. It can be overwhelmed by apical bud defoliation, allowing numerous lateral buds to develop into more lateral branches carrying more fruits and possibly increasing seed yield. This study tested this hypothesis on five hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) cultivars in a 2-year field experiment. In comparison to the intact ones, the defoliated plants developed several lateral shoots. The hemp seed yield was significantly influenced by the year of production, the apical bud removal, and the cultivar. The average two-year seed yield of the defoliated plants (715?±?47?kg/ha) was significantly higher than the yield of the intact plants (568?±?35?kg/ha). Absolutely the greatest effect of apical bud removal on the seed yield was observed for the cultivar ‘Novosadska konoplja’, where increase was 225?kg/ha (25%); a slightly smaller difference occurred for the cultivar ‘Uniko-B’ (183?kg; 30%), followed by ‘Juso-11’ (140?kg/ha; 27%) and ‘Bialobrzeskie’ (128?kg/ha; 29). Cultivar ‘Beniko’ presented the smallest difference with apical bud removal – 58?kg/ha (15%) yield increase We maintain that hemp producers can achieve a larger seed yield not only by selecting an appropriate cultivar and row distance but also by removing apical buds.  相似文献

Panicle traits are the most intuitive and representative features of rice germplasm resources that have been utilized in the determination of its identity, genetic diversity, yield, and quality. Based on the approaches of ethnobotany, cultural anthropology and plant morphology, we analyzed the panicle traits of 95 traditional Kam fragrant glutinous rice landraces according to folk classification in Qiandongnan Prefecture of Guizhou Province in the past 10 years. A total of 95 Kam fragrant glutinous rice landraces were tested, of which 91% consisted of those with awns, and landraces with awn lengths of 2–6 cm comprised 62%. The coefficient of variation (CV) of awn color, husk color and Grain color was more than 50%, thereby indicating extensive morphological variations among the traditional Kam fragrant glutinous rice landraces. The average Shannon–Wiener value (diversity index, H′) for panicle qualitative traits was 0.50, which was significantly higher than that of quantitative traits (0.22), thereby indicating a relatively higher degree of genetic diversity among qualitative traits. Cluster analysis of panicle morphological traits showed that 95 Kam fragrant glutinous rice landraces could be divided into five categories, using the Euclidean distance of 0.68 as threshold. Each cultivar manifested unique panicle traits. The present study on the morphological diversity of Kam fragrant glutinous rice landraces provided basic information that may be utilized for the conservation and sustainable use of Kam fragrant glutinous rice landraces.  相似文献

Cowpea cultivation in many countries around the Mediterranean Basin depends on a number of locally adapted populations conserved on-farm at a small scale, rather than on the use of modern varieties. Documentation, characterization and exploitation of traditional local populations could contribute to their conservation and utilization as sources of desirable characteristics. Therefore, a study was conducted to (a) characterize, (b) assess diversity and (c) classify 23 on-farm conserved local cowpea populations based on 32 agro-morphological traits. Investigations on diversity of characteristics related to seed yield, mineral and seed crude protein content as well as on correlations among them were carried out. A relatively high phenotypic diversity was observed. In particular, a high level of within population diversity was found (\( \bar{H}s \) = 0.34) exceeding that among populations’ diversity (Gst = 0.27). Principal component analysis classified the majority of local populations into two groups (mainly according to populations’ seed coat color and eye color), further divided into six subgroups regardless of the populations’ geographical origin. Significant differences were also observed among the populations studied for potassium and calcium, as well as for their seed crude protein content which ranged from 22.14 to 28.37 %. The results show appreciable levels of intra- and inter-phenotypic diversity in on-farm conserved cowpea populations, which indicates the existence of a valuable gene pool for future exploitation in breeding programs.  相似文献

Durum wheat landrace genotypes are disappearing from the main wheat areas in Jordan, because of spreading of new uniform cultivars and the serious reduction in wheat cultivation. This study was conducted to evaluate genetic diversity in durum wheat landraces from Jordan and to identify desirable agronomic traits. Landraces were collected from two target areas: Ajloun and Karak. The collected material was grown under rainfed conditions using an augmented design with five blocks and four repeated check cultivars. Data were collected for 14 morphological and agronomic traits. Phenotypic diversity index (H′) was estimated, and the relationships among accessions were measured using cluster analysis and dendrogram similarity matrix. The results revealed the presence of a wide range of variability among landraces., which possess high levels of variability for biological yield, fertile tillers, number of seeds per spike, seed weight per spike and weight of 1000 seeds. These landraces must be considered as a reservoir of genes that plant breeders need in their wheat improvement programs and should be conserved both ex situ and in situ.  相似文献
