There are a number of newly described and emerging disease syndromes affecting the domestic ferret, and the purpose of this article is to make veterinarians aware of these diseases. A recently described systemic coronavirus infection appears to be a variant of the ferret enteric coronavirus and is currently termed “ferret infectious peritonitis.” Disseminated immunopathologic myositis, aplastic anemia/bone marrow aplasia, acute hemorrhagic syndrome, and oral ulcerations are also described, although the exact etiologies for these diseases have yet to be determined. There appears to be at least 2 important amino acid metabolism deficiencies in ferrets: hindlimb weakness in older ferrets (L-carnitine) and cysteine urolithiasis. Ferrets have recently been found to be susceptible to H1N1 influenza, so knowledge regarding this zoonotic disease is essential for veterinarians working with these animals. A novel Mycoplasma spp. has also recently been identified in ferrets with chronic respiratory problems that originated from one breeding colony. Because these diseases are still being investigated, practitioners who treat a ferret patient exhibiting clinical signs consistent with any of the conditions mentioned are encouraged to contact people who are knowledgeable of that particular illness.  相似文献

Orthopedic conditions requiring surgical intervention and correction frequently occur in the ferret patient. Elbow luxations and long bone fractures are among the most common syndromes affecting the ferret patient, which often presents in an emergency setting. Orthopedic conditions in the ferret, as in other mammalian species, are often the result of trauma. Surgical treatment including reduction and stabilization of the affected bony structure, combined with supervision and the recommended postoperative care, can provide a good prognosis to return to normal function for the ferret.  相似文献

A 5-year old, neutered, male, domestic sable ferret presented 24 hours after escaping outside and sustaining unknown trauma. Physical examination findings included tachycardia, tachypnea, and hind limb paresis in a laterally recumbent patient. Radiographs, laboratory evaluation, and abdominocentesis revealed the presence of hemoperitoneum, blunt hepatic trauma, pneumothorax, and a small abdominal hernia. The ferret was treated with resuscitative fluids, thoracocentesis, abdominal counterpressure, and blood transfusion. This is the first case report of multi-systemic trauma in a ferret. The ferret made a complete recovery and was discharged to the referring veterinarian three days after presentation. (Vet. Emerg. Crit. Care, 10:13–18, 2000)  相似文献

A 6-year-old, neutered male ferret presented with weight loss. Radiography revealed an enlarged liver and other abdominal masses. The ferret was euthanized, and at necropsy, the stomach wall was thickened, mesenteric lymph nodes were enlarged, and the liver contained multifocal tan nodules. Histopathology confirmed lymphoma and granulomatous inflammation in all affected organs. Acid-fast bacilli were present in the lesions and were confirmed to be Mycobacterium avium by PCR.  相似文献

This article summarizes the general topic of ferret hematology, including discussion of restraint for phlebotomy and phlebotomy sites, red and white blood cell morphology, interpretation of the hemogram, and normal and abnormal factors affecting the hemogram. In addition, the apparent lack of blood groups and techniques for bone marrow aspirates and blood transfusion are addressed. There is much still to be learned about the ferret and its diseases. We often depend on tests as simple as the complete blood cell count to help guide us in our diagnosis and treatments of this patient.  相似文献

Convivial and playful, the ferret has cohabited with humans for hundreds of years. Maintenance of this mustelid's health and quality of life is paramount for the endurance of the human-animal bond. This review article for veterinary care givers, veterinarians, and staff, encompasses discussions on: husbandry, clinical techniques, prevalent diseases, history taking, physical examination, vaccination, and pain recognition. Ectopic ureter is the most common cause of congenital urinary incontinence in the dog and cat. The occurrence of ectopic ureter in the dog has been estimated to be 0.016%. A 6-month-old ferret was evaluated for urinary incontinence and urine scalding around the perineal and inguinal areas. Ultrasonography showed a nondistended urinary bladder that contained a possible intraluminal blood clot. Excretory urography revealed a left ectopic ureter. The ferret was initially treated with oral amoxicillin-clavulanate and topical silver sulfadiazine ointment for the perineal and inguinal dermatitis associated with the incontinence. Because of the potential for complications and additional surgery with ureteral transplantation, a left nephroureterectomy was performed. Surgical recovery was uneventful and the incontinence improved, although a small amount of incontinence-associated dermatitis was still present 24 days after discharge. Phenylpropanolamine therapy was initiated to address a suspected dysfunction of the urethral sphincter. Urinary incontinence improved with the phenylpropanolamine therapy; however, a small amount of incontinence persisted throughout the 3 months in which the ferret was evaluated. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of an ectopic ureter in a domestic ferret.  相似文献

A 17-month-old albino, castrated male domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented for evaluation of a heart murmur. The murmur was first auscultated when the ferret was 12 weeks of age, coinciding with its first known evaluation by a veterinarian. At the time of diagnosis, the ferret was reported to have mild exercise intolerance. The clinical findings on the ferret were within normal limits other than a right parasternal systolic murmur (grade 4/6) that radiated to the left parasternal region. The ferret was not receiving any medications. All 4 features of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) were identified with echocardiography. Thoracic radiographs were suggestive of TOF with mild right-sided enlargement of the cardiac silhouette and small pulmonary vasculature. A serum biochemistry profile and complete blood count were within the reference ranges for domestic ferrets. At that time atenolol (3.25 mg, every 24 hours, orally) was prescribed to treat the clinical condition of the animal. At a 1-week follow-up examination, the patient's heart rate had decreased from 240-300 beats per minute to 180-260 beats per minute. The owner reported that the ferret was sleeping more frequently during the first week of therapy but had normal activity when awake. At a 5-month recheck examination, the patient was reported to be completely normal at home. This is the first case report of TOF in a ferret.  相似文献

A 4-year-old, castrated, male domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was evaluated for a possible upper respiratory tract infection and wheezing for approximately 3 weeks. Supportive care for a suspected upper respiratory tract infection was initiated; however, the patient became progressively more dyspneic over the next 48 hours. A possible tracheal mass was identified upon thoracic radiographic imaging of the ferret. Tracheoscopy and a computed tomography scan of the neck and thorax confirmed the presence of a tracheal mass approximately 3 cm from the larynx obstructing 80% of the tracheal lumen. Rather than pursuing surgical resection, the owners elected humane euthanasia. An adenosquamous carcinoma of the trachea was diagnosed after histologic analysis. This tumor type has been diagnosed in the lungs of ferrets that were experimentally exposed to carcinogens found in cigarette smoke; however, there are no previous reports of this or any other tumor type associated with the ferret trachea. A tracheal mass causing a partial upper airway obstruction should be considered within the differential disease diagnosis list when a ferret is presented with dyspnea.  相似文献

The domestic ferret is a seasonally polyoestrous species. Females reach puberty at the age of 8–12 months. Females exhibit a constant oestrus between late March and early August if they are not bred. Increasing tumescence in the pink-coloured vulva is a sign of pro-oestrus. Oestrus can persist for up to 5 months, but once ovulation is induced, either pregnancy or pseudopregnancy ensues. Follicular development and atresia overlap in such a manner that there is a recent cohort of follicles available for ovulation whenever copulation might occur. Copulation may last from 15 min to 3 h, the average being 1 h. Ovulation is induced by pressure on the cervix associated with copulation. After sufficient LH release, the pre-ovulatory follicles mature and an average of 12 oocytes (5–13) per female are ovulated 30–40 h after copulation into the ovarian bursa. The ferret oocytes are most capable of being fertilized up to 12 h after ovulation, i.e. 42–52 h after copulation. Ferret oocytes ovulate at the metaphase of the second meiotic division (MII) embedded in three layers of corona radiata cells. Embryos enter the uterus over a period of several days starting on day 5 after mating. Between days 12 and 13 after mating, the embryos have become implanted in the endometrium. Implantation in the ferret is central with rapid invasion of the uterine epithelium by the trophoblast over a broad area that eventually becomes a zonary band of endotheliochorial placenta. Gestation length is 41 days (39–42 days). The domestic ferret gives birth to an average of eight kits (1–18 kits), which weigh 6–12 g at birth.  相似文献

A 3-month-old intact female ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented with a 2-month history of ataxia. On physical examination, the ferret had difficulty standing upright. During the neurologic examination, the patient had a left head tilt and positional strabismus, circled to the left, and was ataxic. Results of the complete blood count were consistent with a mild normocytic normochromic anemia. Initial treatment was supportive. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed and revealed an asymmetry of the inner ears. A brainstem auditory evoked response test was also performed. History, clinical signs, and diagnostic test results indicated that the ferret was suffering from congenital peripheral vestibular syndrome and left-sided deafness. Congenital disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of young ferrets with peripheral vestibular syndrome. Supportive care and physiotherapy can improve balance and motor function, leading to an acceptable quality of life.  相似文献

An 18-month-old castrated male ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented to the veterinary hospital for acute collapse but died despite initiation of emergency treatment. The body was submitted for a complete postmortem examination. The pathologist determined the ferret was suffering from severe necrotizing encephalitis, necrogranulomatous mediastinal lymphadenitis, and ulcerative dermatitis attributable to systemic Candida parapsilosis. This is the first report of systemic Candida parapsilosis in a ferret.  相似文献

A 6-year-old spayed female ferret (Mustela putorius furo) exhibiting clinical signs of weakness, anorexia, lethargy, weight loss, and frequent urination was presented for a veterinary evaluation to determine the underlying cause of the aforementioned abnormal behavior and clinical condition. Physical examination revealed a large, firm, painless, movable subcutaneous mass at the base of the tail. Radiographic and ultrasound images confirmed the presence of a soft tissue mass compressing the sacrococcygeal vertebrae, but there was no evidence of metastatic lesions. Because of the poor prognosis and progressive deterioration of the animal's clinical condition, the ferret was humanely euthanized. Gross necropsy revealed a 4 × 4 × 3.5 cm, firm, yellow-tan, ovoid, subcutaneous mass wrapped around the rectum and the anus. The mass did not appear to breach the serosa. Evaluation of the abdominal cavity revealed a pale yellow liver, possibly associated with hepatic lipidosis with no gross evidence of metastasis in the body cavity. The histopathological features of the mass were consistent with a liposarcoma. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of subcutaneous liposarcoma reported in a ferret.  相似文献

A 2-year-old, male castrated ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented with progressive abdominal distention and loss of muscle mass despite normal appetite. Physical examination findings included pale mucous membranes, a prolonged capillary refill time, a pulse rate greater than 300 beats/min, and severe abdominal distention. Abdominal ultrasound showed free abdominal fluid and an enlarged liver with distended hepatic veins and caudal vena cava. During the echocardiographic examination, abnormalities observed included a 2-mm-diameter left-to-right shunting atrial septal defect (ASD) with concurrent severe dilatation of the right atrium and eccentric hypertrophy of the right ventricle with mild pulmonary hypertension. All other echocardiographic measurements were within normal limits. The owner declined treatment, and the ferret was euthanized. Postmortem examination confirmed the ultrasonographic findings. The free abdominal fluid (200 mL) was a non-septic fibropurulent exudate. Decompensated right-sided heart failure due to ASD and exudative peritonitis of undetermined origin were the final diagnoses. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an ASD in a ferret.  相似文献

为寻找免疫失败的原因,有效防治犬瘟热的流行,对临床一水貂犬瘟热疑似病例,取其肝、脾、脑等组织研磨后接种Vero和BHK细胞分离病毒,并对分离毒株进行一系列鉴定。通过电镜观察,发现了大小约150 nm的副黏病毒样粒子。结果表明,分离株对鹅、鸡、小鼠、家兔、山羊、猪红细胞均无凝集性,该分离株的毒价TCID50为10-4.87;分离株病毒对乙醚、氯仿敏感,病毒的核酸型为RNA。经间接免疫荧光试验,接种病毒的BHK细胞出现特异性的亮绿色荧光。对分离株和对照毒株分别提取RNA进行RT-PCR扩增,最后得到与预期扩增片段(294 bp)相符的核酸电泳带,充分证明分离病毒为犬瘟热病毒。  相似文献

The unusually short intestinal tract of ferrets and closely related mustelids lacks a cecum and ileocolic valve. As a result, the transit time of ingesta in these carnivores is very rapid compared with other animals, and their food is inefficiently digested. Although the precise nutritional requirements of ferrets have not been determined by feeding defined diets, information has been compiled from experience feeding commercial and analyzed homemade diets to breeding ferrets, fitch, and mink at all stages of their lives. The requirements of spayed or neutered pet ferrets are met by allowing them constant access to drinking water and a palatable, pelleted, or extruded, 90% dry matter, premium cat or ferret food that, as fed, contains at least 15% fat and 30% high quality, meat source protein, less than 30% carbohydrates, and approximately 4 Kcal of metabolizable energy per gram. Lower density diets with more carbohydrate and less protein are associated with poor reproductive performance and growth and greater susceptibility to infectious and metabolic diseases.  相似文献

In several mammalian species, the configuration of germinal vesicle (GV) chromatin correlates with the developmental competence of oocytes. Yet, no study has been published on the configuration of GV chromatin in ferret, nor is it known whether a specific configuration predicts meiotic competence in this species, in spite of the potential importance of ferret cloning to the study of human disease and to species conservation efforts. Here, we report on an analysis of the chromatin configuration in ferret GV oocytes and on how they correlate with meiotic development. Three distinct configurations were identified based on the degree of chromatin condensation: (1) fibrillar chromatin (FC), featuring strands of intertwined chromatin occupying most of the visible GV region; (2) intermediate condensed chromatin (ICC), characterized by dense, irregular chromatin masses throughout the GV; and (3) condensed chromatin (CC), which is highly compact and centered around the nucleolus. We also found that chromatin configuration was related to the extent of association with cumulus cells in cumulus–oocyte complexes; CC-configured oocytes were most often surrounded by a compact cumulus layer and also a compact corona but FC-configured oocytes were associated with neither. In addition, increasing chromatin condensation corresponded to an increase in oocyte diameter. Finally, following in vitro culture, significantly more CC-configured oocytes underwent maturation to meiotic metaphase II than did FC- or ICC-configured oocytes. We conclude that, in ferret, chromatin condensation is related to the sequential achievement of meiotic competencies during oocyte growth and differentiation, and thus can be used as a predictor of competence.  相似文献

Acquired oronasal fistula is a rare cause of chronic nasal disease in ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) and other species. An adult male ferret presented with an acute unilateral swelling on the head and a 1-year history of sneezing. Physical examination and diagnostic procedures revealed an oronasal fistula of dental origin with concurrent abscess formation. Treatment included drainage of the abscess, treatment of the infection, extraction of the teeth involved in the oronasal fistula, debriding of the fistula edges, and placement of a medicated gauze. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of an acquired oronasal fistula in a domestic ferret.  相似文献
