Abstract

The use and disposal of biosolids, or wastewater treatment sludge, as a fertilizer and soil amendment is becoming increasingly widespread. We evaluated the multiyear use of biosolids in apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) production, grown on productive agricultural soils. Class A biosolids were initially applied annually at rates of 0, 1.9, 5.8, and 11.7 Mg · ha?1 (dry basis) to a 2‐year‐old apricot orchard on the USDA‐ARS research site on the eastern side of the San Joaquin Valley, CA. These application rates provided estimated rates of 0 (control), 57, 170, and 340 kg total N · ha?1 yr?1, respectively. Compared to the control treatment, the applications of biosolids significantly increased soil salinity (electrical conductivity from 1:1 soil–water extract) and total concentrations of nutrients [e.g., calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S), phosphorus (P), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu)] after 7 years but did not increase the concentrations of selected metals [cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb)] between 0‐ and 60‐cm soil depths. Mean concentrations of total nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) in soils (0‐ to 15‐cm depth) ranged from a low of 1.3 g kg?1 to a high of 5.2 g · kg?1 and from 14.1 g · kg?1 to 45.7 g · kg?1 for the control and high biosolids treated soils, respectively.

Biosolids applications did not lead to fruit yield reductions, although fruit maturation was generally delayed and more fruits appeared at picking times at the high rate of application. Yellow fruits collected from all biosolids applications were significantly firmer than were fruit collected from control trees, and they had higher concentrations of Ca, potassium (K), S, iron (Fe), and Zn in the fruit. Among the fruit quality parameters tested, the juice pH, total acidity, and fruit skin color were not significantly affected by biosolids applications. Malic acid concentrations decreased most of the time, while citric acid concentrations increased with increasing rates of biosolids applications. Overall, our results suggest that nonindustrial biosolids applied at an annual rate at or less than 11.7 Mg N · ha?1 (340 kg N · ha?1) can be safely used for apricot production on sandy loam soils.  相似文献

Rice, dry bean, corn, and soybean are important food crops. Phosphorus (P) deficiency is one of the most yield-limiting factors for these crops grown on highly weathered Brazilian Oxisols. Four greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine P requirements of these four crops. The P levels used were 0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg kg?1. Growth, yield, and yield components evaluated of four crop species were significantly increased with the application of P fertilization. Most of the responses were quadratic in fashion when the P was applied in the range of 0 to 400 mg kg?1. Maximum grain yield of upland rice was obtained with the application of 238 mg P kg?1 of soil, maximum dry bean grain yield was obtained with the application of 227 mg P kg?1 of soil, and maximum grain yield of soybean was obtained with the application of 224 mg P kg?1 of soil. Maximum shoot growth of corn was obtained with the addition of 323 mg P kg?1 of soil. Most of the growth and yield components had significant positive association with grain yield or shoot dry weight. Phosphorus concentration and uptake were greater in the grain compared to straw in upland rice and dry bean plants. Overall, P-use efficiencies decreased with increasing P rates.  相似文献

Hydroponic and pot experiments were conducted to assess the uptake of heavy metals (Cd and Zn) by a common crop plant, African basil, Ocimum gratissimum. In addition, the effects of soil amendments, hydroxyapatite (HA) and cow manure on plant growth and metal accumulations were compared. In the hydroponic study, plants were exposed to various concentrations of Cd (2.5 and 5 mg L?1) and Zn (10 and 20 mg L?1) for 15 days. O. gratissimum was shown to be a Cd accumulator more than a Zn accumulator. Cadmium concentration in its shoots exceeded 100 mg kg?1. In the pot experiments, soils from a heavily Cd-contaminated site (Cd 67.9 mg kg?1 and Zn 2,886.8 mg kg?1) were treated with cow manure and HA at the rates of 10% and 20% (w/w), and 0.75 and 1.5% (w/w), respectively. Plants were grown in the greenhouse for 3 months. The addition of cow manure resulted in the highest biomass production and the lowest accumulations of Cd in plant parts, while HA was more efficient than cow manure in reducing Zn uptake. Leaves of African basil showed a decreased Cd concentration from 1.5 to 0.3 mg kg?1 (cow manure) and decreased Zn concentration from 69.3 to 34 mg kg?1 (HA). This clearly demonstrates the efficiency of HA and cow manure in reducing metal content in leaves of plants grown on high metal-contaminated soil to acceptable or close to acceptable values (0.2 mg kg?1 for Cd, 99.4 mg kg?1 for Zn).  相似文献

In order to understand the bioaccumulation of mercury in fish in the Iranian coastal waters of the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf, different fish species were sampled from both regions in January 2002. Mullet fishes were sampled from the Caspian Sea and six other species from the Persian Gulf: Largetooth flounder, Spotfin flathead, Japanese threadfin bream, Greater lizardfish, Elongate sole and Giant seacatfish. In the Persian Gulf, total Hg concentrations in fish ranged from 0.0123 to 0.0867 mg kg?1 w.w. (0.0614 to 0.433 mg kg?1 d.w.). Methylmercury accounts for 64–100% of the total mercury. Highest mercury concentrations were observed in the predatory fish: Giant seacatfish, Threadfin bream and the larger Greater lizardfish caught near Mogham Port. In these species the methylmercury fraction is always higher than 90%. A low methylmercury fraction was only observed in the smallest specimen of flounder and Elongate sole. In the Caspian Sea Hg concentrations in Mullet ranged from 0.0102 to 0.108 mg kg?1 w.w. The observed concentrations are comparable to those found in other areas of the Persian Gulf as well as in other marine environments and are much lower then the WHO guideline of 0.5 mg kg?1 w.w.  相似文献

Two greenhouse experiments were conducted simultaneously to evaluate polymer-coated and common urea in upland rice production. The nitrogen (N) levels used for both the N sources were from 0 to 400 mg kg?1 of soil. Maximum grain yield was obtained with the addition of 167 mg N kg?1 polymer-coated urea and 238 mg N kg?1 common urea. Maximum value of other plant traits was obtained with N applied from 233 to 313 mg kg?1 depending on plant traits and N source. Nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) decreased with increasing N rate in the two N sources. Based on results of growth, yield, and yield components, and NUE it can be concluded that the N sources were equally effective in upland rice production. Base saturation, pH, and exchangeable calcium (Ca) increased with increasing N rates while iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and copper (Cu) contents decreased with the increasing N rates.  相似文献

Amending vegetable soils with organic materials is increasingly recommended as an agroecosystems management option to improve soil quality. However, the amounts of NO, N2O, and N2 emissions from vegetable soils treated with organic materials and frequent irrigation are not known. In laboratory-based experiments, soil from a NO 3 ? -rich (340 mg N?kg?1) vegetable field was incubated at 30°C for 30 days, with and without 10 % C2H2, at 50, 70, or 90 % water-holding capacity (WHC) and was amended at 1.19 g?C kg?1 (equivalent to 2.5 t?C ha?1) as Chinese milk vetch (CMV), ryegrass (RG), or wheat straw (WS); a soil not amended with organic material was used as a control (CK). At 50 % WHC, cumulative N2 production (398–524 μg N?kg?1) was significantly higher than N2O (84.6–190 μg N?kg?1) and NO (196–224 μg N?kg?1) production, suggesting the occurrence of denitrification under unsaturated conditions. Organic materials and soil water content significantly influenced NO emissions, but the effect was relatively weak since the cumulative NO production ranged from 124 to 261 μg N?kg?1. At 50–90 % WHC, the added organic materials did not affect the accumulated NO 3 ? in vegetable soil but enhanced N2O emissions, and the effect was greater by increasing soil water content. At 90 % WHC, N2O production reached 13,645–45,224 μg N?kg?1 from soil and could be ranked as RG?>?CMV?>?WS?>?CK. These results suggest the importance of preventing excess water in soil while simultaneously taking into account the quality of organic materials applied to vegetable soils.  相似文献

This study evaluated the petiole uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sulfur (N, P, K, and S) by the potato from two seed meals, mint compost, and five commercially available organic fertilizers under an irrigated certified organic production system. Available soil nitrate (NO3-N) and ammonium (NH4-N) from each amendment averaged 115 kg N ha?1 at application and 25 kg N ha?1 30 d after planting through harvest, with minor differences between fertilizers. Petiole N declined from an average of 25,000 mg N kg?1, 4 wk after emergence to 3,000 mg N kg?1 prior to harvest. Petiole P and K concentrations were maintained above 4,000 mg P kg?1, 10,000 mg K kg?1, and 2,000 mg S kg?1 tissue, respectively, throughout the growing season in all treatments. Tuber yields were not different between fertilized treatments averaging 53 Mg ha?1. This study provides organic potato growers baseline information on the performance of a diverse array of organic fertilizers and amendments.  相似文献

Abstract

Greenhouse experiments were carried out to study the influence of gyttja, a sedimentary peat, on the shoot dry weight and shoot concentrations of zinc (Zn) and boron (B) in one bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Bezostaja) and one durum wheat (Triticum durum L., cv. Kiziltan) cultivar. Plants were grown in a Zn‐deficient (DTPA‐Zn: 0.09 mg kg?1 soil) and B‐toxic soil (CaCl2/mannitol‐extractable B: 10.5 mg kg?1 soil) with (+Zn = 5 mg Zn kg?1 soil) and without (?Zn = 0) Zn supply for 55 days. Gyttja containing 545 g kg?1 organic matter was applied to the soil at the rates of 0, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10% (w/w). When Zn and gyttja were not added, plants showed leaf symptoms of Zn deficiency and B toxicity, and had a reduced growth. With increased rates of gyttja application, shoot growth of both cultivars was significantly enhanced under Zn deficiency, but not at sufficient supply of Zn. The adverse effects of Zn deficiency and B toxicity on shoot dry matter production became very minimal at the highest rate of gyttja application. Increases in gyttja application significantly enhanced shoot concentrations of Zn in plants grown without addition of inorganic Zn. In Zn‐sufficient plants, the gyttja application up to 5% (w/w) did not affect Zn concentration in shoots, but at the highest rate of gyttja application there was a clear decrease in shoot Zn concentration. Irrespective of Zn supply, the gyttja application strongly decreased shoot concentration of B in plants, particularly in durum wheat. For example, in Zn‐deficient Kiziltan shoot concentration of B was reduced from 385 mg kg?1 to 214 mg kg?1 with an increased gyttja application. The results obtained indicate that gyttja is a useful organic material improving Zn nutrition of plants in Zn‐deficient soils and alleviating adverse effects of B toxicity on plant growth. The beneficial effects of gyttja on plant growth in the Zn‐deficient and B‐toxic soil were discussed in terms of increases in plant available concentration of Zn in soil and reduction of B uptake due to formation of tightly bound complexes of B with gyttja.  相似文献

Purpose

A total of 58 dewatered sludge samples were collected from 58 sewage treatment plants (STPs) geographically located in 31 provincial cities of China; the concentrations of heavy metals and antibiotics were determined to monitor the pollutant levels on a large scale, and the pollutant concentrations in sludge samples from different sources of sewage sludge and different geographical regions were compared.

Materials and methods

All the samples were divided into two portions, one of which was air-dried for determination of heavy metals. The other portion was placed in a brown glass bottle and frozen at ?20 °C for antibiotics analysis. Total heavy metals were digested with aqua regia and determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (Varian SpectrAA 220FS and Varian SpectrAA 220Z). The antibiotics were extracted with EDTA-sodium phosphate buffer with acetonitrile/Mg(NO3)2-NH3?H2O, v/v, 3:1 and analysed by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) and quantified by the isotope-labelled internal standard method.

Results and discussion

In all the sludge samples, zinc was the most abundant metal followed by copper, with relatively low concentrations of chromium, lead, nickel and cadmium. Only 20 % of samples exceeded the Chinese class A values of heavy metal standards for agricultural use (GJ/T309-2009). Sixteen different antibiotics were detected in all the sludge samples, and fluoroquinolones (FQs) and tetracyclines (TCs) were more abundant than sulfonamides (SAs). Concentrations of ∑FQs, ∑TCs and ∑SAs ranged from 1,569 to 23,825 μg kg?1 (mean 8,274 μg kg?1, dry weight), from 592 to 37,895 μg kg?1 (mean 8,326 μg kg?1, dry weight) and from 20.1 to 117 μg kg?1 (mean 55.4 μg kg?1, dry weight), respectively. Tetracyclines (except chlortetracycline) were significantly correlated with zinc and lead. No significant regional trends were observed in the concentrations of heavy metals and antibiotics in sludges.

Conclusions

Heavy metal concentrations are not the major factor restricting domestic and mixed flow sludge application, but the antibiotic concentrations in sludges are problematic; regulation of antibiotic use and establishment of standards to ensure safe handling of sludges are needed.  相似文献

Environmental concern due to plant accumulation of natural radionuclides is a major concern in uranium mining areas. To evaluate the risk associated with the transfer of radionuclides to edible plants, the uptake of 238U, 226Ra, and 210Pb by Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. subsp. pekinensis (Lour.) Hanelt) grown in soils contaminated with uranium-mill tailings (UMT) was investigated. Test plants were grown under controlled conditions in substrate composed of soil and UMT in different ratios. Activity concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, and 210Pb in substrate, leaves, and roots were measured and the concentration ratios determined. Soil characteristics were determined, since they directly affect bioavailability of radionuclides. Concentration ratios of 238U, 226Ra, and 210Pb in leaves varied from 0.001 to 0.006, 0.024 to 0.172, and 0.004 to 0.011, respectively, and in roots from 0.020 to 0.126, 0.015 to 0.241, and 0.033 to 1.460, respectively. Concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, and 210Pb in leaves and roots were found to correlate with the amount of 238U, 226Ra, and 210Pb in the substrate. A higher amount of 226Ra accumulated in aboveground parts (57–877 Bq kg?1 d. m. for leaves) compared to 238U (0.6–4.7 Bq kg?1 d. m. for leaves) and 210Pb (8–53 Bq kg?1 d. m. for leaves), which were mainly stored in the roots. The relationships between the amount of radionuclides in plants and soil characteristics and their role in radionuclide uptake are discussed and critically evaluated.  相似文献

A pot experiment, in which composted pig manure was applied to soils at rates of 0%, 0.5%, 1.5%, 3.0%, and 5.0% (W/W) to simulate additions of different amounts of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) to soil, was conducted to assess accumulation of metals by rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants from soils treated with manure. Results indicated that Cd concentrations in rice grains were more than the limit of 0.2 mg kg?1 when 0.14 mg kg?1 or more Cd was loaded to Ferralsols by manure application, but it was not more than the limit in Calcaric Cambisols. Zinc contents in polished rice grains did not exceed the permissible limit of 50 mg kg?1 in two soils. Copper concentrations in rice grain were slightly more than the limit of 10 mg kg?1 in Ferralsols but not in Calcaric Cambisols. Results suggested greater risk of heavy‐metal contamination from manure to paddy rice in Ferralsols than in Calcaric Cambisols.  相似文献

The rate at which dried soils are rewetted can affect the quantities and forms of nutrients in leachates. Both dried and moist replicated (n?=?3) samples of two contrasting grassland soil types (clayey vs brown earth) were irrigated during laboratory experiments with identical total amounts of water, but at different rates, ranging from 0 h, increasing by 30-min increments up to 4 h, and additionally a 24-h rewetting rate. Total P concentrations in leachates from dried samples of both soils generally decreased as rewetting rate increased, ranging from 2,923?±?589 μg P L?1 (0.5 h rewetting rate) to 731?±?46.0 μg P L?1 (24 h, clayey soil) and 1,588?±?45.1 μg P L?1 (0.5 h) to 439?±?25.5 μg P L?1 (24 h brown earth). Similar patterns in concentrations occurred for molybdate reactive P (MRP), although concentrations were generally an order of magnitude lower, indicating that the majority of the leached P was probably organic. The moist brown earth leached relatively high concentrations of MRP (maximum 232?±?10.6 μg P L?1, 0.5 h), unlike the moist clayey soil (maximum 20.4?±?10.0 μg P L?1, 0 h). The total oxidised N concentrations in leachates were less affected by rewetting rate, although longer rewetting rates resulted in decreased concentrations in leachates from the dried samples of both soils. The difference in responses to rewetting rates of the two soils is probably due to differences in the fate of the microbial biomass and adsorption properties in the soils. Results show that soil moisture could be an important factor in regulating nutrient losses and availability, especially under changing patterns of rainfall predicted by future climate change scenarios.  相似文献

Compositional Nutrient Diagnosis technique involves a yield target for discriminating between high- and low-yield subpopulations when developing norms. Traditionally, this yield value is estimated by finding the inflection point of the cumulative variance ratio function versus yield relationship through a third-order equation. However, yield targets frequently lie outside of the experimental yield range. A comparison among traditional (unrestricted) and restricted cubic model, and restricted and unrestricted Boltzmann equations was performed using a database (n = 360) of fresh matter yield and nutrient concentrations in one–year old cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica L. The unrestricted Boltzmann equation resulted to have the best goodness-of-fit. The yield target was 27.01 kg plant?1 associated to the unrestricted Boltzmann equation for phosphorus cumulative variance ratio function versus yield relationship. Proposed nutrient optimum concentrations are: 11.4 g kg?1 for nitrogen (N), 3.4 g kg?1 for phosphorus (P), 42.3 g kg?1 for potassium (K), 42.5 g kg?1 for calcium (Ca), and 16.2 g kg?1 for magnesium (Mg).  相似文献

Phosphogypsum (PG), which contains Ca, P and S and has an acidic effect, may be applied to manage soil constraints such as alkalinity and salinity. For increasing nutrients bioavailability, biofertilizers are commonly applied. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess PG effect either alone or in combination with the mixed co-inoculation of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria on a saline soil. In a greenhouse pot experiment with maize (Zea mays L.), the inoculated and non-inoculated saline soils were treated with PG at 10 g kg?1 (PG10), 30 g kg?1 (PG30), and 50 g kg?1 (PG50). The soil pH, electrical conductivity (ECe), and macro-(NPK) and micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu) availability to mays were examined. Applying PG reduced soil pH and co-inoculation induced significant decreases in soil ECe. Applying PG increased significantly soil available P. Applying PG combined with co-inoculation effectively increased the soil available K. The soil available micronutrients decreased significantly with PG. However, the inoculated maize treated with PG showed significant higher dry weight (82.1–127.4%) and nutrients uptake than the control. It could be concluded that PG along with co-inoculation may be an important approach for alleviating negative effects of salinity on plant growth.  相似文献

The analysis of gamma emitters natural radionuclides, i.e., 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K, has been carried out in soil, vegetation, vegetable, and water samples collected from some Northern area of Pakistan, using gamma-ray spectrometry. The ??-ray spectrometry was carried out using high-purity Germanium detector coupled with a computer-based high-resolution multi-channel analyzer. The activity concentrations in soil ranges from 24.7 to 78.5 Bq?kg?1, 21.7 to 75.3 Bq?kg?1, and 298.5 to 570.8 Bq?kg?1 for 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K with the mean value of 42.1, 43.3, 9.5, and 418.3 Bq?kg?1, respectively. In the present analysis, 40K was the major radionuclide present in soil, vegetation, fruit, and vegetable samples. The concentration of 40K in vegetation sample varied from 646.6 to 869.6 Bq?kg?1 on dry weight basis. However, the concentration of 40K in fruit and vegetable samples varied from 34.0 to 123.3 Bq?kg?1 on fresh weight basis. In vegetation samples, along with 40K, 226Ra, and 232Th were also present in small amount. The transfer factors of these radionuclides from soil to vegetation, fruit, and vegetable were also studied. The transfer factors were found in the order: 40K?>?232Th????226Ra. The analysis of water samples showed activity concentrations values for all radionuclides below detection limit. The internal and external hazard indices were measured and found less than the safe limit of unity. The mean value of outdoor and indoor absorbed dose rate in air was found 64.61 and 77.54 nGy?h?1, respectively. The activity concentrations of radionuclides found in all samples during the current investigation were nominal. Therefore, they are not associated with any potential source of health hazard to the general public.  相似文献

The study was carried out between 2008 and 2010 on 8-year-old pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) trees cultivar ‘Kandhari Kabuli.’ The potential efficiency of bio-organics used along with chemical fertilizers on cropping behavior, quality attributes, nutrient availability, physico-chemical, and biological properties of soil were investigated. Bioorganic nutrient sources, namely, vermicompost (VC), biofertilizers (BF), farm yard manure (FYM), and green manure (GM), along with chemical fertilizers was evaluated in 13 different treatment combinations. Conjoint treatment application of VC at 20 kg tree?1, BF at 80 g tree?1, FYM at 20 kg tree?1, GM as sun hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.) along with 75% of the recommended dose of nitrogen–phosphorus–potassium (N–P–K) chemical fertilizers significantly resulted in maximum fruit set (52.03%) and fruit yield (34.02 kg tree?1). All of the fruit quality characteristics were also improved significantly when compared to nitrogen–phosphorus–potassium (N–P–K) chemical fertilizers. This superior combination also enhanced physical-chemical and biological properties of the rhizosphere soil. Microbial biomass of in terms of Pseudomonas, total culturable soil fungi, Azotobacter chroococcum, actinobacteria, and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi improved 385.57, 60.26, 134.19, 168.02, and 39.87%, respectively, over control. This combination also resulted in considerable greater concentration of leaf macro-and micronutrients: N (2.63%), P (0.25%), K (1.57%), iron (Fe; 197.87 mg kg?1), copper (Cu; 14.65 mg kg?1), zinc (Zn; 59.36 mg kg?1), and manganese (Mn; 200.45 mg kg?1).  相似文献

Deficiency of micronutrients increasing in field crops, including upland rice in recent years. The objective of this study was to determine requirement of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) boron (B) and iron (Fe) for upland rice grown on a Brazilian Oxisol. The levels used were: Zn (0, 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg kg?1), Cu (0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg kg?1), B (0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg kg?1) and Fe (0, 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 mg kg?1). Plant height, straw yield, grain yield, panicle number and grain harvest index (GHI) were significantly improved with the addition of these micronutrients. Root growth was also improved with the application of micronutrients, except with the addition of B. Maximum grain yield was obtained with the addition of 51 mg Zn, 24 mg Cu, 5 mg B kg?1, and 283 mg Fe kg?1 soil. Similarly, maximum straw yield was obtained with the addition of 38 mg Zn, 17 mg Cu, 6 mg B kg?1, and 1500 mg Fe kg?1 soil. Maximum plant height was obtained with the addition of 54 mg Zn, 10 mg B kg?1, and 1197 mg Fe kg?1 soil. Copper did not affect plant height significantly. Maximum panicle number was obtained with the addition of 22 mg Cu kg?1, 3 mg B kg?1, and 1100 mg Fe kg?1 soil. Zinc did not affect panicle number significantly. Maximum GHI was obtained with the addition of 61 mg Zn kg?1, and 8 mg B kg?1. Zinc was had a linear increase in GHI in the range of 0 to 80 mg kg?1, and Fe showed a negative relationship with GHI.  相似文献

Metal (Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn, Fe) concentrations in marine sediment and zooplankton were investigated in Izmir Bay of the Eastern Aegean Sea, Turkey. The study aimed to assess the levels of metal in different environmental compartments of the Izmir Bay. Metal concentrations in the sediment (dry weight) ranged between 4.26–70.8 μg g?1 for Cu, 233–923 μg g?1 for Mn, 14.9–127 μg g?1 for Ni, 25.6–295 μg g?1 for Zn, 12,404–76,899 μg g?1 for Fe and 38,226–91,532 μg g?1 for Al in the Izmir Bay. Maximum metal concentrations in zooplankton were observed during summer season in the inner bay. Significant relationships existed between the concentrations of certain metals (Al, Fe, Mn and Ni) in sediment, suggesting similar sources and/or similar geochemical processes controlling such metals. Higher concentrations of Cu, Zn and percent organic matter contents were found in the middle-inner bays sediments. Based on the correlation matrix obtained for metal data, organic matter was found to be the dominant factor controlling Cu and Zn distributions in the sediment. In general, mean Cu and Zn levels in the bay were above background concentrations in Mediterranean sediments. Zooplankton metal concentrations were similar to sediment distributions.  相似文献

Abstract

Soil acidity is one of the limiting factors affecting the production and sustainability of pastures and crops in many parts of the world. An on‐farm experiment was conducted in Australia to investigate the cultivar variation in alfalfa (lucerne) (Medicago sativa L.) with respect to soil acidity and response to applied lime. The experimental site was a brown sandy clay loam with a soil pH of 4.8 (1:5 calcium chloride). Ten cultivars (Hunter River, Hunterfield, Sceptre, Aurora, Genesis, Aquarius, Venus, PL90, PL55, and breeding line Y8804) were tested at two levels of lime (0 and 2 t ha?1). Lime application significantly increased the root growth, nodulation, leaf retention, leaf to stem ratio, herbage yield, and crude protein content of alfalfa. Liming had a significant effect on elemental composition of alfalfa shoots. Aluminum (Al) concentration was reduced from 93 mg kg?1 DM in nil lime treatment to 45 mg kg?1 DM in +lime treatment. Similarly, manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) shoot concentrations were reduced from 74 mg kg?1 DM and 92 mg kg?1 DM to 59 mg kg?1 DM and 76 mg kg?1 DM, respectively. Liming significantly improved the calcium (Ca) concentration of shoots, while there was a little effect on phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn) concentrations of alfalfa shoots. Cultivars had differential response to lime application. Response to lime application was greater in Y8804 and Aurora alfalfa where yield increased by 32% and 31%, while yield increase was 11–22% in other cultivars. Cultivars also differed significantly in root growth, nodulation, leaf drop, leaf to stem ratio, crude protein content, and elemental composition of shoots. Cultivars with better performance in no liming treatment had comparatively lower shoot Al, Mn, and Fe concentrations compared with other cultivars.  相似文献

Phosphorous dynamics within Lake Sirio (NW Italy) were investigated, considering both water and sediments. The total phosphorus (TP) concentration in the water is about 79 μg l?1 after the winter mixing, that is in homogeneous conditions; then TP content increases up to an average of 360 μg l?1 in late autumn in the deep hypolimnium (30–45 m). This deep lake portion accounts for only 1/12 of the water volume. Close to the water-sediment interface, TP concentrations up to 530 μg l?1 are observed. Sediment sampled at depths of 20 and 33 m contains less than 2,000 mg kg?1 of TP, whereas cores from the deepest sediments (46 m) display TP values of 2,000–4,000 mg kg?1 at the water-sediment interface, increasing with depth to 16,000 mg kg?1 at about 60–100 cm. In these deep sediments the main chemical form is the Al–Fe–Mn bound P (about 90% in the high TP cores) and Fe and Mn are also highly enriched (3 and 9 times more than in the shallow sediments respectively). The P–Fe association is confirmed by SEM-EDS and XRD analyses. The vertical distribution of the P content in the water column is consistent with its release from sediments, but in this hypothesis an unrealistic P release rate from 8.1 to 3.0 g m?2y?1 was estimated. A more complex model is therefore proposed, involving a process of P concentration in the sediments of the central (deepest) part of the lake, and a short term sediment-water exchange. The TP vertical variability and speciation in the cores suggests a change in the sediment retention capacity, connected to the lake shift to more eutrophic conditions.  相似文献
