Abstract:The use of carbon fibre for replacement of ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments is described with reference to twenty dogs. Fourteen breeds were represented and their weights ranged from 10 to 73 kg (average 27 kg.). Most dogs did not take weight on the affected leg until 3–6 weeks after surgery but then limb function gradually improved. The average recovery period was 10 weeks. Regular clinical and radiological examinations were carried out during follow-up periods ranging from 6 months to 3 years. Fifteen dogs regained full use of the affected leg but lameness persisted in the remaining five. In no case was there a recurrence of joint instability.
