COMMENTS ON THE GENUS DENDROCALAMUS NEES FROM CHINA

The Genus Dendrocalamus Nees from China, reported by Li Dezhu and Hsueh Chiju in 1988, is a heterogeneous mixture which contains 5 sections. The Sect.Dendrocalamus is the typical representative of the Genus Dendrocalamus; the Sect.Bambusoidetes does not belong to the Genus Dendrocalamus for its flowering glumes and anthers do not have a sharp spine at the tip, being derived from the Bambusa Subgen.Leleba; the Sect.Draconicalamus resemble very closely the Sect.Sinoclamus and it should belong to the Sect.Sinocalamus. First of all, the Sect.Sinocalamus does not belong to the Genus Dendrocalamus because the type species of this section has the most primitive spikelet including 6 or more flowers, which would be impossible for any species originated from the Genus Dendrocalamus as the latter has spikelets with 3-5 flowers or less.On the contrary, due to its simple stigma and lack of lodicule, it would have been impossible for the Sect.Sinocalamus to evolve towards the most primitive species of the Genus Dendrocalamus and thus could only have originated from the Genus Dendrocalamopsis.Therefore, the Sect.Sinocalamus should belong to the Genus Sinocalamus McClure emend.Keng f. Secondly, the Sect.Patellares also does not belong to the Genus Dendrocalamus because the wall of its culm is very thin.In the path of evolution from the Genus Bambusa to the Genus Dendrocalamus, the culm wall of all the species is very thick.However, since it resembles very closely the species Bambusa pallida Munro, it may have originated from the Genus Bambusa or it might be a new genus.
