STUDIES ON THE MORPHOLOGY OF COTTON GRASSHOPPER CHONDRACRIS ROSEA ROSEA (DE GEER) 4. THE ABDOMEN

By dissecting and observing the abdomen of Chondracris rosea rosea and comparing it with Locusta migratoria (Reiche et Fairm) and Dissosteira carolina it has been found that apart from the general morphological features these species of locusts have in common, the abdomon of Chondracris rosea rosea posseses many specific structures which differ from those of the other species. They are as follows: 1. There is a semimembrane area on each side of the terga of the first and second urites of the female Chondracris rosea rosea 2. The lateral apodeme of the female Chondracris rosea rosea, is about 0.90--1.5cm, which is longer than that of Locusta migratorioides. 3. The aedeagal apodeme of the male Chondracris rosea rosea has a "U" form, thin and pointed at the two ends, and inclines outwvards. 4. The stucture of the epiphallus is simpler than that of Locusta migratoria migratorioides. 5, On the farther lateral sides of the back phallomeres there are 4 small protuberances, Which is similar to that of Dissosteira carolina. 6. In the front corner of the sterna of both the male and the female Chondracris rosea rosea, there is a pair of apodemas which are longer than those of Locusta migratoia migratorioides.
