Abstract: | The case report in this issue by Woodford et al. (2017) describes the surgical management of an extrahepatic portosystemic shunt in a 5‐week old miniature foal. Only a handful of reports exist in the literature describing surgical procedures for repair of these congenital abnormalities in foals. One of the important aspects of the accompanying case report was the multidisciplinary approach taken in handling, imaging and surgical repair of the extrahepatic shunt. Small animal internal medicine specialists and surgeons diagnose portosystemic shunts much more frequently than equine veterinarians, regardless of whether they are general practitioners or specialists. It is therefore important to work as a team with small and large animal practitioners. The case described by Woodford et al. (2017) had a positive outcome. |
