The Fe/Al ratio from pH 9.5 buffered tetraborate extract is proposed as a test to classify the “sols bruns ocreux” and “sols cryptopodzoliques”, which are hard to classify in situ according to morphological characteristics. Determined from AB or AB_h horizons, the Fe/Al ratio is significantly less than 1 in “sols bruns ocreux” and more than 1 in “sols cryptopodzoliques”.
