Status and Trend of Forest Certification

Forest certification is a means of protecting forests by promoting responsible forestry practices.Forest certification provides an independent third-party assurance that a forestry operation meets standards set by a certification program.Forest certification is expanding rapidly during the past decade.In January 2002 the area of certified forest was estimated at 109 million hectares.Demand exceeds supply in some major markets(the United Kingdom,the Netherlands,Germany and Belgium)where many buyers are committed to certification.However,the potential timber supply from the worlds certified forests is large,estimated at about 234 million m³ on an annual basis.the paper described status and trend of forest certification.the authors also put forward some suggestions on forest certification in China.
