Sediment pollution in the southern baltic
Authors:A Lewandowski  T Szczepanska
Abstract:In 1991 geochemical mapping of sediments in the southern Baltic was begun by the Polish Geological Institute, Marine Geology Branch to determine sediment pollution, sediment spreading and the rate of accumulation of pollutants to define ‘hot-spot’ regions. the initial results on the concentration of heavy metals in 36 samples collected in the Gdansk Basin are presented. One ‘hot-spot’ is the network of channels in Gdansk Harbour where the bottom sediment (sludge) is highly contaminated. Sampling results and proposals for dredging, separation of the sand fraction, dewatering and the deposition of sludge are discussed.
