Abstract:To clarify the effects of leaf sheath on the stem lodging resistance of hybrid rice,four hybrid rice varieties were selected to study the difference of the breaking-resistant strength of basal internodes with and without leaf sheath,the number of leaf sheath layers,the thickness of leaf sheath and the survival leaf sheath number of basal internodes and their correlation to the breaking-resistant strength of basal internodes.The results showed that the breaking-resistant strength of basal internodes with leaf sheath was 1.4~1.9 times that of basal internodes without leaf sheath,and the breaking-resistant strength of basal internodes was reduced by 24.3%~46.8% when the leaf sheath was removed.The leaf sheath had a greater impact on the varieties with weak lodging resistance at heading stage,but on the varieties with strong lodging resistance at mature stage.From heading stage to mature stage,the number of leaf sheath layers,the thickness of leaf sheath and the number of survival leaf sheath all showed a downward trend,the values of leaf sheath characteristics of the varieties with strong lodging-resistance were significantly or very significantly greater than those of the varieties with weak lodging-resistance,and the decreasing range of the varieties with weak lodging-resistance was greater than that of the varieties with strong lodging-resistance.The number of leaf sheath layers,the thickness of leaf sheath and the number of survival leaf sheath were all significantly and positively correlated with the breakingresistant strength of basal internodes with leaf sheath.It is indicated that leaf sheath can significantly improve the lodging resistance of basal internodes of rice,mainly by improving plant morphological and physiological indexes such as the increase in the number of enclosed leaf sheath layers,thickness of leaf sheath,activity of leaf sheath.
