Abstract:Maximum production of buttons for freezing (19-32 mm) is obtained at populations which are too high to permit efficient husbandry when a square pattern of plant arrangement is used. Total yields of buttons were the same for square arrangements and for plants grown in rows 61 cm apart; for three populations, namely 2.7, 10.8 and 19.1 plants/m2, although the yields from each population differed. Maximum yields of freezing-grade buttons were obtained from 10.8 plants/m2 for each spatial arrangement. With increasing population the proportion of plants contributing to yield diminshed, and this effect was more pronounced in plants grown in 61-cm rows than with a square pattern arrangement.
