ON FOOD SUPPLY AND DEMAND IN CHINA

Analyses on the increase of per capita national income and the change of people's consumptionstructure in China show that the total amount of grain demand will reach the level of 526.5 billion kilos by2000.Judged by the estimation of potential grain production,the author points out that attention should bepaid to the following points so as to balance the grain demand with supply.First,the grain sown area mustremain stable.Second,the per unit area yield must be raised by a big margin.Third,the population must becontrolled strictly.In order to make pepole's living standard comparatively well-off and meet the needs ofsocial and economical development,agriculture must be attached great importance and a systematic,harmonious,effective and safe grain security system must be set up.
