Abstract: | Aerial input of heavy metals into a man-made urban aquatic ecosystem near Gary, Indiana, was monitored for a 5 mo period and compared to that into a rural system. Significantly greater inputs of Cd, Pb, Zn, and Fe were noted for the urban system. Effects of automotive exhaust from the nearby Indiana Toll Road on Pb deposit into the system appeared to be slight. Estimates of the fraction of the total sediment metal burden accounted for by aerial deposit ranged from 69% for Cd to 18% for Fe. |
