Abstract: | Young apple trees planted in soil covered by black plastic had the most vigorous growth and the highest crop. Trees in permanent grass sod had the lowest growth and yield. Those in plots treated with herbicides or cleaned by mechanical methods were intermediate.Soil temperature and moisture content were high under plastic, and the nitrogen content in leaves was high during the first two years, but low later. |
