Seasonal occurrence and habitat preference of rabid skunks in southern alberta
Authors:Rosatte R C
Abstract:Eighty cases of rabies in skunks (Mephitis mephitis) occurred in southern Alberta between December 1, 1979 and December 31, 1981. Fifty-three percent (43-80) were diagnosed during March-May (breeding and parturition). There were significantly more rabid females than males during that period. Nonrabid and rabid skunks appeared to select occupied sites rather than unoccupied sites for winter and maternity denning.
