Abstract:Oysters (Ostrea edulis) and scallops (Pecten maximus) were grown in lantern nets at three stations in Birterbuy Bay, Co. Galway, Ireland. Shell and tissue growth and mortalities were recorded over a period of 18 months. Sea water temperatures, salinities, particulate organic carbon concentrations (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON) concentrations, particle concentrations and volumes of the seston and current speeds were recorded during a growing season. Differences in growth between stations are explained in terms of differences in temperature, organic carbon content of the seston and current speeds.
