Abstract: | A commercially available diatomaceous earth filter has been successfully modified for microfiltering sea water used to grow bivalve larvae. The filter consistently removes up to 96% of the suspended matter in the water down to at least 2.3 microns, and reduces the number of heterotrophic bacteria to between 1 and 5 × 102 ml?1. Growth and development of bivalve larvae in this water is excellent. |
