Abstract:Information about preslaughter handling was recorded for 49 974 pigs killed in five slaughterhouses. Most pigs (99·0%) travelled less than 200 miles to slaughter and nearly three-quarters not more than 60 miles. There was a close relationship between distance travelled and journey time. Overall, 57·6% of pigs travelled for 2 h or less and about three-quarters for 3 h or less. Average speed was slightly higher on longer journeys. There was a bimodal pattern to the distribution of lairage times, reflecting the practice of keeping some pigs overnight for slaughter the next morning. On average, 28·1% of pigs were laired for 14 h or more. However, 46·1% were killed after not more than 2 h in lairage. There was a tendency for pigs which had travelled greater distances to be in lairage longer. Total time between leaving the farm and slaughter ranged up to 32 h. Nearly 52% of pigs were killed within 5 h of leaving the farm and over three-quarters within 10 h; 22·3% were killed after more than 18 h.
