Abstract:Effects of the low-phosphorus stress on root growth and the protective enzyme activity of two potato cultivars (Atlantic and Xindaping) were investigated under the conditions by addition of normal Hoagland’s nutrient solution and 60% phosphorus concentration of Hoagland solution. The results indicated that 60% phosphorus concentration could restrict the over ground part growth of plant but promote the ability of lateral root generation and the root/shoot ratio in cv. Xindaping, however no significant changed was found in root growth and lateral root number when compared with the control for cv. Atlantic. When stressed for forty days, the guaiacol peroxidases (POD) and catalase (CAT) activity and in cv. Atlantic maintained relatively stable and the superoxide dismutases (SOD) and chlorophyll content decreased significantly, whereas those in cv. Xindaping fell rapidly, which were significantly different from the control. These results suggest that it would be more adapted for cv. Atlantic to grow under 60% phosphorus concentration conditions compared with cv. Xindaping.
