Outline and Developing Strategy of Hybrid Rice Production in Asia

In Asia, hybrid rice production is now very limited with an area of about 150 million hectares covering only 10% of total rice area (1 480 million hectares), and is dominantly in China. To develop hybrid rice in the countries other than China, the successful experiences of China such as governmental strong supports and heavy investments, nationwide great cooperations, establishment of sound seed production system could be used for reference. The developing strategy of hybrid rice production in Asia was also suggested. It mainly included: specific organizations led by FAO should be set up for developing hybrid rice; China should train for hybrid rice personnel and dispatch experts for other countries; China should transfer actively the hybrid rice technology, parents and hybrid seeds to other countries; diverse international cooperations and exchanges should be conducted.
