Development Methodologies for Knowledge Based Design System

Knowledge based engineering (KBE) is mainly concerned with design methodology. It focuses on concurrent engineering, design for assembly and manufacturing, knowledge base and so on. KBE project developers will collect the rules and the experts' knowledge of design, analysis and manufacturing and then integrate them into the design process. KBE design system can provide right knowledge and right tools at the right time. It is defined as a process for developing computer based engineering tools that interactively provide product and manufacturing design rules and analysis to the designer/engineer as part of the nominal design process using a team composed of subject matter experts and knowledge engineers. This paper gave the basic theory of KBE and the advantages of KBE for design system. Meantime the development process of KBE design system was presented in detail. And then an example of the development and application of KBE design system was introduced briefly.
