Abstract:The fermentation of dietary fiber and protein in the intestine of pigs is of concern because of their potential beneficial or harmful effects on intestinal health and the environment.In this paper,the effects of dietary fiber and protein fermentation on intestinal environment of pigs and on nitrogen gas and odor emission in pig manure and pigsty in recent years were reviewed,and the effects of protein fermentation and related metabolites production and dietary fiber fermentation on intestinal health,bacterial protein synthesis and nitrogen excretion were discussed.In response to the negative environmental impacts of intensive pig production,different nutritional strategies,such as reducing dietary crude protein levels to reduce nitrogen excretion,were used.Overall,dietary fiber and low protein levels are an effective nutritional strategy for reducing nitrogen excretion and environmental adverse effects of intestinal fermentation in pigs.
