Anatomical Evidence of Electroreception in the Coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae)

Serial sections of an immature female Latimeria brain were studied to describe the octavolateral area. Sections were stained with cresyl violet (for cell bodies) and with Klüver-Barrera method for myelinated fibers. The presence of a well-developed dorsal nucleus of the octavolateral area suggests that Latimeria probably possesses the electroceptive capacity with ampullary organs.
