Compared with certain developments overseas where manpower and horsepower have been replaced with machine horsepower, the mechanization of harvesting and transport of timber in the Republic of South Africa has more or less come to a standstill using “motor manual” methods. Reasons for this are discussed against the domestic background and silvicultural practice that is followed locally with special reference to the use of available labour.
