Abstract:Recent studies have shown that entomopathogenic fungi have dual hosts in nature, i.e., they can colonize into insect tissues as pathogen, and inoculate plant tissues as symbiont. Entomopathogenic fungi could promote plant growth and improve the resistance of host plants following inoculation. This finding indicates that the distinct ecological role of entomopathogenic fungi will be better for employing them for pest management effectively. In this study, we reviewed the colonization characteristics of endophytic fungal entomopathogens in host plants, and summarized their effects on insect pest control and plant pathogens resistance as plant endophytic fungi, and moreover, the underlying mechanism on improving the resistance of host plants to pests was discussed. Finally, future research direction of fungal entomopathogens as dual biocontrol agents was suggested and prospected.
