Selection and Breeding of Fine Poplar Species and Development of Short Rotation Poplar Forest and Its Study Trend in France

Poplar occupies an important position in French forestry. The selection and breeding of fine poplar species in France is at an advanced level in the world. Genetic im-provement of section Aigeiros Duby and Tacamahaca Spach has been the main work of French poplar breeding scientists who havc been also paying attention to the improve-ment of Section Leuce Duby concurrently to suit the requirements of different sites fordifferent purpose. This paper gives a brief account of the poplar research on clone regis-tration, hybrid breeding, provenance test and the fine clones used for the development of short rotation poplar forest, the technical characteristics of forest management andtendering and its economic benefit. Besides, this paper introduces the procedure andcurrent status of selection and breeding of poplar and development of short rotation pop-lar forest and the tendency of its research work.
