Abstract: | Esophagitis has generally been considered rare in dogs and cats. However, it may not be as uncommon as previously thought due to the increased awareness of the disease and the increasing availability of endoscopy. Esophagitis can be caused by gastroesophageal reflux, trauma, foreign bodies, ingestion of caustic substances, structural abnormalities (ie, hiatal hernia, neoplasms), and chronic vomiting. This article will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of esophagitis secondary to gastroesophageal reflux. This is a diagnosis based on clinical signs, exclusion of other causes of esophagitis, and typical radiographic, endoscopic, and histopathologic findings. |
