Abstract:Selenium deficiency of piglets in the experimental farm in Nantong area of Jiangsu Province was diagnosed by histo-pathological observation of the sick animai's cardic museule, skeletal muscule, liver and kidney with significant degeneration and necrosis; by the determination of selenium content in the soil, the feedstuff, the blood, and tissues of piglets; and by effective preventive trial with the injection of sodium selenite alone. The study has shown that statistically significant positive correlation exists between swine blood glutathione pcroxidase (GSH-Px) activity and blood selenium concentration(r=0.5511, P<0.01, n=54)as well as between swine plasma GSH-Px activity and plasma selenium concentration (r=0.5155, P<0.01, n=50). Accordingly, the authors consider that the GSH-Px activity in blood or plasma is a reliable indicator of the evaluation of swine selenium status or useful diagnostic index of swine subclinical cases of deficiency selenium.
