EMBRYOLOGICAL RESEARCH ON THE POLYEMBRYONY TYPES OF POLYEMBRYONIC RICE

The embryological studies on four strains of poly pbryonic rice (Oryza sativa) and some results were discussed this paper. These were carried out mainly to observe the types and the frequencies of polyembryony, and to screen out proper strains which will be further studied and sifted in order to use them as hopeful material for fixing heterosis of rice. At least four types of polyembryony have been found in four strains, including synergid embryo, nucellar embryo, cleavage polyembryony and twin ovules (false polyembryony), of which the frequency of nucellar embryo is up to 10.3% in Twin 3 and 6% in Land 52. The morphological and developmental characteristics of various types of polyembryony were discribed and their probable significance was also discussed in this paper.
