A STUDY OF THE SPINAL ACCESSORY NERVE OF THE CHICKEN

Following application of CB-HRP to the cut end of the rami cutanei of the vagus nerve andthe anterior part of the musculus cutaneus colli lateralis,the labelled motoneurons were found in theintermedial zone of the first two cervical segment of the spinal cord,forming a long nerve nucleus in line withthe intermedial nucleus of the vagus nerve(IM),and its cranial end continuous with the IM in the cranialpart of the Cl.We consider this nucleus as the spinal accessory nucleus of the chicken.The labelled sensoryneurons were seen in the jugular ganglion.Following injection of HRP into the musculus complexus,the la-belled cells were localized in the dorsomedial group of the supraspinal nucleus and no labelled cell was foundin the spinal accessory nucleus.
