| Abstract: | As a part of fuzzy language, hedges are common in human language and play an important role in communication. Based on the views of the pragmatic functions, this paper analyzes the double-level roles of hedges: positive and negative roles. In addition, the author examines that their proper use can make linguistic expression more mild, polite, flexible and effective and can improve the interpersonal relationship between discourse participants, thus helping achieve the purpose of communication; on the other hand, the improper use should be avoided for the purpose of the successful communication. |
