Abstract: | Activities of alkaline and acid phosphatases in normal seminal plasma of healthy Simmental bulls are reported. A pilot study showed that storage has to take place at 0° C and not at room temperature as the enzymes, especially alkaline phosphatase, are unstable at room temperature. 55 (56) first ejaculates and 31 (32) second ejaculates were used for the calculation of the normal mean values of alkaline (and acid) phosphatases. The activities of acid phosphatase and of tartrate labile acid phosphatase of first and second ejaculates were significantly different. The physiological variation was very broad. Phosphatase activities of 130 samples were significantly correlated with some of the usual sperm parameters. The phosphctase activities do not reern to permit an evaluation of the quality of healthy bulls' ejaculates. It is possible that phosphatase activities may be used as a diagnostic tool in pathologic conditions. |
