Construction and Development of Urban Forest System in Beijing

Establishment of urban forest is not only the main task of urban ecology, but also a key infrastructure of urban development. Three major principles of prioritization of ecology, consideration of actual local conditions and human- centered development, and the history of urban forest development in Beijing City were reviewed from the viewpoint of building a livable and ecological city. Problems existing in perception of development, quality of development and process of implementation in Beijing urban forest system were analyzed. Objectives and approaches to urban forest development in Beijing under the new circumstance and in the new period were identified, highlighting future development should be base on the established 3 ecological shelter belts, and follow the concept of forest-water integration through "forest network and water network". The paper proposes that mountain forests should established as the main framework, supplemented with shelterbelt forests in the plain areas, connected by green corridors and inlaid with urban and rural forests. Ultimately, an integrated forest network consisting of "one city, two belts, three networks and multi-spots" will be formed, therefore to optimize the deployment of forest resources.
