Abstract:This study was to evaluate the safety and application potential of bacteriophage lyase as an alternative feed additive for livestock and poultry. Three-day-old healthy white-feather broilers were fed with high(200 mg/kg), medium(100 mg/kg), and low(50 mg/kg) doses of phage lyase preparations(from TSPphg And MMPphg bacteriophage lyases), and the antibiotic product chlortetracycline was added to the diet at a dose of 50 μg/g as a positive control, and the basal diet was used as a blank control. Then, the changes in the feed-to-weight ratios of white feather broilers were recorded within 28 d from the beginning of the experiment, and the indices of their immune organs(spleen, and bursa) and digestive organs(duodenum, jejunum, ileum) were collected from each group of the tested broilers at 28 d of the experimental feeding, and the main antioxidant enzyme indices(SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT) in their serum were measured. The results showed that with the increase in the dosage of compound phage lyase,the feed/weight ratio,and the jejunum and ileum indexes of the tested white feather broilers gradually decreased,and the main antioxidant enzyme activities( GSH-Px,CAT,and SOD) in their serum gradually increased,as compared with the blank group( P<0. 05). The activities of catalase( CAT) and superoxide dismutase( SOD) in the serum of the treated white feathered broilers were significantly better than those of the chlortetracycline group( P<0. 05). The above results indicated that the phage cleavage enzyme was quite safe and could better promote the intestinal absorption and immunity of livestock and poultry,compared with the antibiotic products,and the enzyme could be used as a favorable alternative feed additive in broiler breeding.
