The production of growth-suppressing volatile substances by stored potato tubers

Abstract:Summary The sprout-suppressing constituent(s) of the volatiles may be removed by a solution of silver sulphate in 96% H2SO4 or by aqueous solutions of mercuric acetate or chloride. but not by 96% H2SO4 alone, suggesting that they may be olefinic, ethereal and/or sulphur-containing. Ethylene may be produced in very small quantities, insufficient to be an active olefinic constituent.
