Abstract:Hydroxylation of benzene with H2O2 was carried out in the presence of urushiol and Fe3+ in a benzene-water biphase system. The mixture of urushiol and Fe3+ was found to be a more effective catalyst which gave 45% yield of phenol and the yield was only 4. 4% while using Fe3+ alone. Factors influencing the yield such as temperature of reaction. concentrations of H2O2. pH of the solution and ratio of urushiol to Fe3+ were studied. And the possible mechanism of the reaction was also discussed.
