Abstract:Abstract Based on the examination of forest literature a review is made on researcheson the carbon in forest soils. The paper deals with the effect of human management act-ivities on the carbon in forest soils. In most cases no sisnificant change of carbon inforest soils can be found after forest harvest. Some researches show that if the forestland after harvest is turned into a pasture the carbon content in soils remains basicallythe same. If the cutover is turned into a farmland much loss of carbon in soils will oc-cur. If it is temporarily used for farming or for farming combined with anunal hus-bandry, the soils suffer less deterioration. The effect of burnt biomass on the carboncontent in soils is mainly determined by the frequency and intensity of fires. As to smallfires in respect of their effect during a long period, burning only changes the distributionof organic matter, and causes no obvious changes the distribution of organic matter, andcauses no obvious change of the total amount of the organic matter. If the fire intensityis high and the burning lasts long, the carbon content in soils will be remarkably re-duced. The chanse of a farmland into a forest land is a process of carbon accumulation insoils. The accumulation rate is subject to climates. In wet resion the rate is higher, while in the arid zone it is slower. The soil fertility in Chinese fir forests in the subtropi-cal zone is drastically reduced and an analysis has been made to find out the cause ofsuch a phenomenon. No tillase and no burnins are proposed to promote the productivityof these forests on a large scale, with the release of carbon dioxide greatly reduced.
