The Hepatic Portal Venous System of Fowl

The branches of hepatic portal veins of fowl were observed by means of the cast technique. There are one left and one right portal veins in chicken, but two left and one right portal veins in goose and duck. These veins join and make the pars transversa. In chicken, the cranial, caudal and medial branches diverge from the left lateral lobe portal vein, and the cranial and caudal branches from the right lobe portal vein. In goose or duck, the cranial, caudal branches diverge from both the left lateral lobe portal vein and right lobe portal vein. The pars transversa spreads a lot of branches cranially and caudally respectively. Some of the specialities in intrahepatic spread of avian portal venous system are emphasized and discussed.
