STUDY ON FRUITING CHARACTERISTICS OF LATERAL CANES IN 'KYOHO' GRAPEVINES

The fruiting characteristics of mature fruiting canes derived from lateral shoots were investigated and compared with primary canes of ' Kyoho ' grape ( V. vinefera ? V. labrusca) . 40 lateral canes and primary canes were used for investigation respectively. All test canes were pruned to 8 nodes and tied horizontally onto the trellis wires. The results indicated that lateral canes ( LC ) produced significantly more fruiting shoots and clusters. The flower cluster size (cluster's length and number of florets per cluster ) of LC was significantly larger than those of PC, No significant differences in bud burst and berry setting were found between LC and PC. The number of berries per node of LC were 2.3 times as much as those of PC. The nodes at the base or middle portion of LC were the most fruitful. In contrast, PC were more fruitful at nodes of apices or middle portion. Possible explanations for the higher i'ruitfulness of LC and its corresponding pruning technique are discussed.
