Abstract: | Thermodormancy of celery seeds incubated in the dark at 22°C was alleviated by two N-substituted phthalimides to the same extent as that normally achieved with a mixture of the gibberellins A4 and A7. As previously demonstrated with GA4+7, the highly dormant cultivar ‘Lathom Blanching’ responded more to phthalimides in the presence of cytokinin, whereas ‘Florida 683’ required no cytokinin to elicit the maximum response to phthalimide treatment. Seed-soak treatments with either N-substituted phthalimide improved both the rate of germination and the percentage seedling emergence of both cultivars sown in compost under glasshouse conditions. |
