Abstract: | A total of 600 Escherichia coli strains isolated from 382 preweaned and 197 postweaned pigs with diarrhea were tested for the presence of the eaeA gene by polymerase chain reaction techniques. Of the 393 isolates from preweaned pigs, 23 (5.8%) E. coli strains isolated from 23 pigs carried the eaeA gene. Of the 207 isolates from postweaned pigs, 9 (4.3%) E. coli strains isolated from 9 pigs carried the eaeA gene. The results suggest that eaeA+ E. coli is associated with diarrhea in pre- and postweaned pigs. |
