Abstract:Soil, climate and relief criteria to select the most adequate soil tillage methods are discussed. Using these criteria, a general scheme showing special requirements for various tillage systems is presented. Classifications of soils according to specific draught resistance for ploughing and to compaction problems are discussed, as are special schemes related to the selection of soils requiring deep ripping, soil suitability for minimum tillage, or soil suitability for fully mechanized harvesting of potatoes. Areas of croplands in Romania, classified according to each of the classification schemes discussed, are estimated.
