The output value of forest products in 1988 was 292 million pesos,being 1% of the GNP.The area of natural hardwood forests is about 75% of the total forest area.Since 1959,Cuba began to emphasize the construction of man-made forests.Now the area of man-made forests is 310 000 ha.But the development of forest industry is slow,with a low wood utilization efficiency.The National Research Institute of Forestry under the Ministry of Agriculture conducts multi-directional researches.Achievements in selection of the clone progenies of Pinus caribaea Morelet and P.occi-dentalis Swartz have been made.In Cuba forests are managed a ccording to law.Forest development and utilization are linked with the protection of fauna and flora.All are put under a unified program and management.Forest joint ventures are set up for comprehensive development and utilization of forest products,carrying out a system of production integrated with supply and marketing.The objectives of development for the 20 coming years are:raising the forest coverage to 28%,developing forest products,log processing and constructing large scale man-made forests.
