Abstract:Two hundred and forty broilers were divided into three groups evenly and treated with 0.0, 600 and 1 200 mg/L Na +(from NaCl) in their drinking water separately from 7 to 35 day old to test the hypothesis that excess sodium ion would increase blood volume and packed cell volume and decrease erythrocyte deformability, thus contributing to the increase of ratio of right ventricle to Total ventricle, subsequently to the development of pulmonary hypertension and induced ascites. The treatment groups of 600 and 1 200 mg/L Na + resulted 6.25% and 28.75% mortality respectively from ascites, whereas there was no dead case in the 0.0 mg/L Na + group. The results indicated that increased packed cell volume and increased resistance to blood flow may contribute to the development of pulmonary hypertension and thus induced ascites in the Na + treated group.
