Abstract: | Summary Plants affected by potato stem-mottle disease occurred in three stocks ofKerr's Pink and one ofMajestic potato grown in eastern Scotland. Viruses of the tobacco-rattle type were cultured from haulms of the diseasedKerr's Pink plants and from necrotic areas in spraing-diseased tubers of this variety from a stock grown in Morayshire.
Most of the viruses cultured from diseased haulms and all those from diseased tubers were of a type which multiplied poorly
in inoculated tobacco leaves and were difficult to transmit mechanically.
Although diseased plants ofKerr's Pink produced fewer tubers and yielded less than comparable symptomless plants, potato stem-mottle was inefficiently transmitted
through the tubers of this and of theMajestic variety.
No symptoms of stem-mottle developed in the progenies of plants ofKerr's Pink, King Edward, Majestic andRedskin potato inoculated with tobacco rattle viruses by grafting with systemically infected tomato scions or by mechanical inoculation
with infective tobacco sap. The roots but not the shoots ofChancellor andMajestic potato plants quickly became infected with viruses of the tobacco-rattle type when grown in virus-containing soil in the
glasshouse and viruses cultured from them were of a type which multiplied well in inoculated tobacco leaves.
Potato stem-mottle and spraing diseases are thought to have closely related causes.
